WAPO

quote:

Finally, what if the Red Party controls the state government? The Reds know they're at a numeric disadvantage. But with some creative boundary drawing --  the type you see in grid 3, "neither compact nor fair" -- they can slice the Blue population up such that they only get a majority in two districts. So despite making up 40 percent of the population, the Reds win 60 percent of the seats. Not bad!

In the real world, this is similar to what we see in Pennsylvania. In 2012, Democrats won 51 percent of the popular House vote. But the only won 5 out of 18 House seats -- fewer than one third. This was because when Pennsylvania Republicans redrew the state's Congressional districts, they made highly irregular districts that look like the one below, PA-7, one of the most geographically irregular districts in the nation.

Or you could look at how black Democrats screw their own party by demanding majority-minority districts in Southern states, thereby making adjacent districts solidly Republican.

It’s telling that you people only care about gerrymandering when it helps republicans, yet it was hardly an issue between 1932-1994 when democrats held the house

538 article, called "Hating gerrymandering is easy, fixing it is harder." I suggest you read it and educate yourself because it's not nearly as simple or malicious as your article makes it out to be.

No, that's overall not true. I went through two Gerrymanderings when I was in Politics and the Senate. In every case, it started as a move to create a Black District for a Black leader of the time. When they created 2 Black districts, it also left White Districts. That is the way Congress is now.

Blame Republicans for gerrymandering in the Midwest if you want.

But the real source of gerrymandering is in the south and it’s 100% attributable to “minority majority districts”.

Districts are carved out so specifically to include minority neighborhoods, so as to give a black person a seat in the House..... that every surrounding district in the state is automatically blood-Red purely because the Democratic Party holds the racist belief that black people cannot be represented by a person of another skin color

Gerrymandering became popular after the civil right act, and it favored Democrats.
Stop whining.

You people had no complaints when it worked in your favor
