Dumb i guess. I watched 3 dudes get in a tiny aluminum boat, like a 1536 or simlar, with a dog, one morning and figured d hear about them on the news. The river was high as shite and they were headed for the main channel. Not me.

Well fellas I think an inflatable pfd is I my future after many years going bare. Typically leave landing at 3:30 heading to lodge and dodge plenty barge traffic getting there. Always wear kill switch but not pfd riding alone but know it’s time to start.

Make sure you get an orange or neon yellow one, preferably with reflectors on it. Getting a camo one is like a search and rescue crew trying to find a hunter wearing camo in the woods

Agreed but if I collide with a barge/tug it’s only going to be for recovery purposes. Had a couple close calls with some without nav lights if you believe that, happens more than ya think.

Was hunting a lake once and we came in to get some food. Wind was howling out of the south. Got to the bank and three kids were loading down a 12ft john with gear, decoys and weights. With a 9.9hp motor. The landing was on the north side of a point so you couldn't really tell how hard the wind was blowing. We recommended they don't go out but argued they were going to hug the bank. Our motor wasn't running good so I started the truck while my friend was tinkering with the motor. The kids took off, I turned on the truck and headed back to the dock, and the kids boat already had capsized. With our boat motor already running I jumped back in and we headed out and pulled all three of em out of the water. Nary was wearing a pfd. If we weren't there I'm pretty sure one if not all wouldn't of made it.

My policy has always been if the big motor is running life jackets are on. I've never had a close call but I just always thought it made sense.

I'll be honest growing up we never wore lifejackets. I grew up swimming the sabine and neches rivers. But I realize I'm older now and not in near good enough shape to be swimming the channel even without waders on. I'm gonna make myself wear a pfd if for no other reason than to set a good example for my boys. I know how it is to be young and bullet proof. Those days are behind me ..I'll keep the families in our prayers..

For boating in the winter I highly suggest a float coat. They are SUPER warm and you always have your PFD on. +1000 to Hammertime on a non camo PFD, a huge pet peeve of mine is a PFD that will hide you rather than help someone find you.
I bought a mustang survival coat about four years ago and attached a light that powers up when wet and a PLB (personal locator beacon) that mounts to the outside of the vest. Never hurts to try and be too safe.
However at the end of the day you can't replace sound judgment we all are not as bullet proof as we think we are. If conditions aren't good for your boat/equipment hunt somewhere else or wait until they improve. Your family will appreciate this.

I've got a self inflating PFD that's camo when not deployed but the inner balloon part is yellow with reflectors so when it inflates you're very visible. Best of both worlds. I wear the PFD while actively hunting sometimes so having one that was camo is key.

I wear a mustang inflatable with EPIRB. Also wear Gator Neoprene waders and they will float me I have tested in a pool many times to show people and with a life jacket its impossible to go under. Canvas style waders and the 'breathable' relaxed styles they have now will kill you immediately. Jump in a pool they fill and your done even with a standard PFD we most wear it will not keep you up. Your struggling cannot over come the water weight. in 3 foot of water we tried everything to get the off with no success. The best lifejacket we could find was those little orange neck style things. Without struggling could somewhat keep you head up enough to breath with no struggle. But if your fighting waves your done.
