Ignoring the recruiting aspect, is Leach a top 3 coach?

yes i know recruiting is the most important part of being a CFB HC, so i'm not saying Leach is anywhere near Saban, Dabo, or Meyer. it even puts him well below guys like Fisher, Kirby, Harbaugh, etc
but in terms of just creating a philosophy, hiring coaching, developing players, creating gameplans, and calling games, how many guys are better? i'll still give Meyer and Saban the advantage (b/c they may be 2 of the 5 best HCs in history), but who else is better?
also, on a historical level, is Leach one of the most influential coaches in CFB history? certainly he's the most influential single coach of the modern era. his offense (i know it was Mumme's but Leach took it to a new level) is now the standard across CFB. when was the last time this sort of proliferation occurred?

He's easily one of the best coaches in America. In Wazzu's entire history, they had like 6 good seasons before he took over. In the 4 years before he took over, they combined for 9 wins. He's won 9 games twice, and is currently at 8-1 and ranked in the top 10. He's a beast.

Can the Art Briles / Gus offense be traced back to the Air Raid somehow? Because I'd argue that's the new standard in CFB, rather than the latter.
And maybe it can.
Leach is top 3 IMO, yes.

Definitely one of the most influential coaches on the game historically, but I don’t think he’s a top 3 game day coach. We’re a little swept up in this season forgetting he’s never had a major bowl win.
I’d take Gary Patterson before Mike Leach.

oh the art briles who was Leach's RB coach? that guy?
Gus? not really. he just incorporated the spread option with his hurry up from HS

Gardner Minshew was a borderline player for ECU, and now people are talking about him being drafted. That's all Leach.

I think he is great at turning bad programs into consistent bowl teams but he has never been able to get over the hump. Very good coach that is bordering on elite but not top 3.

Actually no . I said Briles when I meant Chad Morris.
That whole offense. The motion/run/option stuff.
Briles is an AR guy yeah.

given them even talent and you're taking patterson? why?
leach reached the same peak in the Big12, in a much better Big12 and with less talent

Saban
Mullen
Harbough (for what he did at Stanford and his first year at Michigan
Dabo
Meyer
Peterson
Pat Fitzgerald
Kirby
That’s my 9 and in no particular order
Although Fitzgerald is a reach

Chad Morris has his own offense but it's a spinoff from Leach's offense, which isn't that dissimilar to what lots of Leach guys were running. it's all based off the concepts of the Leach offense, just with more motion
the RPO shite is from Leach's tree. iirc, it was Holgorsen who really started that at OSU

only 2 i'd consider

Mullen
needs more skin on the walls, but he's right there. Mullen seems more like he's an upset guy when he catches teams off guard, which will be less frequent at UF. he has to start winning the east to really get on this level
i'll put it this way. Mullen had more comparable SEC talent than Leach has Pac12 talent and Leach is consistently better within the Pac12

Dabo
get the frick out of here. Dabo wins b/c of talent. he's a better overall HC b/c of this, but in terms of coaching? he's not in the same universe as Leach

SFP, why don’t we ask SMS. I’m sure he’ll give us a valid answer

I personally think Chris Peterson is the 2nd best coach in CFB
Dabo should thank Chad Morris for everything he has, which kind of backs up your point in that Leach > Dabo, but he’s got something going at Clemson and I am not going to knock him down a peg for being a recruit, motivate coach first, rather than an X’s and O’s Guy

did you even read OP?

That's the whole point of the thread, though. With all talent being equal, would you prefer Leach or Dabo?
Posted on 11/4/18 at 8:54 am to hendersonshands
With all talent being equal, and playing with a bunch of 3*s, I’m taking Leach over Saban

Art Briles, absolutely. His system is a mix of the Air Raid, Run and Shoot, and the old Single Wing. Gus has his own system in which he developed while coaching in High School. That branches off to Hugh Freeze and Chad Morris
