Fill me in on primitive camping

Figured this would be the best place to look for info on primitive camping. I live in the New Orleans area, but my daughter and i want to go do some camping next weekend. I want to teach her primitive camping just as i learned as a child. We want to rough it (sort of) but do the whole tent, make a fire, catch our food etc type of thing .
What is the best place i can go. I looked into fountainbleau state park but it didn’t seem to be isolated enough. Not sure where around here you can just go into the woods and camp out as I’m just not sure about the laws around it. Have any of you done it, if so where at.

Indian Creek at Woodworth has primitive camping areas. There is also a lake where you can fish if you want to catch your own food.
You can find enough privacy but at the same time if the need arises, you are not far from gravel roads to lead you back to the main area and back to civilization quickly.
When you are in the primitive area you will be far away from everything except the lake. However you will be traveling 3 hours away from home probably to make the trek up here to do so.

The Mississippi River batture is where my cousins and I use to camp as kids. I do fish the river several times a year and in lower St. Bernard Parish you can find lots of high and dry batture areas to camp in.
Many places you cross the levee and need to walk through some tall grass to get to the willow trees that pave the way to the river bank. Once in the trees, there is not much grass but a silty floor with plenty of leaves from the trees and more than enough wood for fires. Not sure what the river looks like now and whether access would be easy to fish for catfish.

Bogue Chitto NWR allows camping. I’ve been there although never camped it. Need a boat to access most of the refuge. Read up on the rules before you go.

If you're willing to make a 3-4hour drive, check out Stuart Lake Campground. It's in the Kisatchie National Forest in Pollock, LA just a little north of Alexandria. Has a lake for fishing and facilities for showers and such as needed but is a completely primitive camp ground.
My dad took me there several times as a kid and I'll be taking my sons(5 & 8)soon. It's the perfect weather for it right now.

I like this guys channel for camping stuff. He does primitive stuff quite a bit and this specific adventure I linked is pretty primitive.

I suggest a canoe/camping trip in Mississippi. There are several outfitters that set you up completely with canoes, paddles, life jackets, and shuttling.
The closest one is Wolf River Canoe and Kayak just off I-10 at the Long Beach exit:

Joe Feil has been in the business many years, runs a good shop. I've taken the overnight camping trip (from Cemetery Landing back down to his compound) many a time with my daughters, going back to when they were 5 years old.... Beautiful scenery, lots of white sandy beaches to tent camp on and wood for fires. And while you shouldn't rely on them totally for your food (bring an ice chest with other supplies), there's plenty of fish to be caught in the river.
Other outfitters can be found on Black Creek, Okatoma Creek, and I think there may be one on Red Creek. All of those are further inland/north and longer drives.

How old is your daughter OP? I enjoy primitive camping myself and go on routine backpack and canoe trips. But I'd be careful taking a kid.
There's not a whole lot more you get out of primitive camping as a kid then you would staying in a cabin on a river or lake. BUT, the benefit is that if the weather is bad your weekend is not ruined.
Now if your kid is 10+ that's a different story as you can actually hike and go places away from the vehicle more.

2 days on the Whiskey (Ouiska Chitto River) is fun too. you can carry a shite ton of gear in a canoe. The local Canoe rentals have shuttles to both ends. If you do a canoe trip, double bag all your gear. A great time can get ruined quick with wet gear. I've never fished it though, so I don't know how good that would be.

You catching channels, flats, and blues? I was listening to the MeatEater podcast a few weeks back and they were talking about catching catfish on bank poles. This sent me down a rabbit hole online and I found some articles about catching them in the batture bonds on the MS river around New Orleans. Seems awesome.

Exactly those. I went 2 weeks ago right down in Arabi around Mehle St. and caught 2 in about 1/2 hour and one was a 4 lb. flathead and the other was close to 20 lb. channel cat. I decided that was all I needed and picked up and headed home.
I cleaned the flathead by fileting it to get it off the bone and skin and froze it. The Channel cat I first peeled the skin and gutted it after removing the head to make a catfish courtbouillon, but that damn thing was so thick at the head end I wound up fileting the meat off the bone to cook. Fed 3 of us for 3 days and still put some in the freezer.
Caught those two on worms out of my compost pile using a 3 ounce lead and a single #6 hook about 2 ft. above it on a loop about 10 inches long.
Water is a bit high for me to get to my usual spot, and when it goes down, I'll be there with bells on. This time last year I was hammering cats.

Have never used live bait to catch fish in the river. I use either earthworms, bait shrimp, chicken liver balls or cut bait.
I've tried beef melt since it is a pretty bloody bait when used for crawfish, but I've not had any success with it.
Lots of folks do well with menhaden(pogies) cut bait since it is an oily fish that attracts them. My problem is getting menhaden to use for bait since no bait shop sells it and the only place I found some commercially was at Schaefer's Seafood in Bucktown, but they only sell it frozen in 50 lb. boxes-----and I'm not storing that much menhaden.

Try to get some from a crawfisherman. We go through a few hundred lb a day.
