There's a shortage of refs for all sports in all states.

I try hard to recruit but frankly my honest answers about the time commitment, pay, training, clinics and stories about dickhead fans who think Friday rules are the same as Sat/Sun turn most off.
No doubt, it isn't for everyone. Take a special person to want to learn those differences between what they see on TV and what is called on Fridays.

But every Friday in the fall is a big commitment by itself
this is the biggest thing, but to me it is a way to get out of the house for a few hours a week and spend some time around sports.

I get why people officiate, but on the flipside of that. I can't fathom why anyone would want to. Especially youth levels.

I umpire baseball and officiate basketball. We are short in virtually every sport.
HS games, roughly $100 -/1 $15 depending on travel distance.

I did it (football )for 4 yrs ,Thibodaux Association. I loved it wish I still could (disabled / back). Shortage every year.Got to do the chains for Nicholls because of it. I only worked Friday nights because I coach during the week. It was great for me . Wish I'd started earlier and ref'd other sports as well.I believe there's been a couple of raises since then

Pretty much every sport, in the US, below college level, is struggling with officials.
The reasons are not hard to figure out.
1) While the HS games aren't that bad, and can be really good, you gotta work a lot of youth games, JV games, etc, to get experience. Working pee-wee football at 9 am on Saturday is terrible. No one wants to "earn their stripes".
2) Lack of time. People are working more hours than ever before. More wives are working, so the time that could be spent calling games, is spent relaxing, or with family, or helping out around the house, etc.
I did it a lot in college and as a younger adult. It was a lot of fun. Being out there on the field, it's a good time. Also, kept me in very good physical shape. I'm at an age where i'm working a lot and whatever hours I'm not working, I'm spending time with my kids and wife, or volunteering in the community. Just can't swing the time. Maybe in a few years when the kids get older.

They dont make shite, but I'd still like to do it. My brother refs basketball and at first they try to send you all over the place for $25-30 game (literally would lose money on gas and travel). They said he should carpool with the other refs.

Not sure what the "-/1 $15" was supposed to mean, but if you are actually in the Baton Rouge area, I'd like more info on this $100/game.

I umpired baseball for 30 years. It was never for the money. I played thru college and was used to "going to the park" It was a way for me to stay connected to the game I loved. This upcoming generation is all about the money for the most part. Officiating now is like volunteering for community service. You have to want to do it for the kids. I didn't even have to mention the parental abuse that goes with the thankless job.

JV $55, including travel.
Varsity $100, including travel.
This is for football.

Its not about the money. Its about lack of respect for officials from fans, coaches. You make a mistake and you get crucified and threatened. You put in the time to study rules and train to the greatest wxtent possible, and its just not appreciated. You get belittled and threatened by people who aren't willing to go out there themselves and give their time and effort. Its sad but youth sports in general are struggling.

In Kansas. Tonight, I’ll get $60 for a middle school game a little over an hour away. Tomorrow night, I’ll get $75 for a varsity game, pretty close to my home. In Texas, we had to be an official for a certain amount of time at the sub varsity level before we could be considered for a varsity crew. I spent a lot of nights shadowing crews and charting penalties in 2004 and 2005 for free.
When I moved to Kansas, I didn’t get back in right away. After an 8 year break, I signed back up and was on the field for a varsity game week one. I was picked up by a crew 4 weeks later. That’s not because I’m any better than anyone else. It’s because I’m breathing and I can get off work early on most days.
This year has been especially bad. I’ll see 4 or 5 emergency requests per week this year for varsity officials. Some places have gone with 4 man crews out of necessity. It’s crazy.
Kansas football fans are pretty mild compared to some of the JV stuff I did around San Antonio. That was pretty wild sometimes.

I tried high school softball. Everyone I worked with was semi retarded. I had to get out. It was like umpiring with the people of Walmart.

In Arkansas you’ll make $100 for a Friday night varsity game at 4A and above. You’re gonna have to travel though, it’s just the nature of the beast. It’s a rural state and the conferences are spread all over. The good ones don’t do it for the money but no one is gonna do it for free. When you factor in your gas and meals and time your hourly rate isn’t much better than working part time at a big box store. For the most part guys can live with that because of the comraderie and being able to be a part of a sport you love. There aren’t many new guys coming in and the next few years it will start to show. I’ve tried to recruit but it’s hard when the new guys have to cut their teeth on the dumbasses coaching and parenting at the youth level. Most wont stick around long enough to see varsity action.
