Just saw this young man wearing a shirt which said "God Hates JRPGs".

That is all.

I tend to lean more toward JRPGs, since they’re not bound by the social justice shackles a good bit of the major ones in the west are. They’re a bit more imaginative too.

I was all about JRPG's in the 90's, but I lost interest when they stopped being about swords, and monsters, and quests and started being about whatever the frick this is

JRPG art has always been weird. As graphics have improved they just get to show it off more.

It's always been highly stylized but I would argue it's certainly gotten weirder as it went, especially for Western audiences.

The JRPG genre used to be highly medieval in nature for the most part. Wizards, warriors, elves, dwarves, kingdoms, etc. The tropes were more what Western audiences were used to in fantasy, ala Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, etc.

The futuristic anime'ish elements slowly crept in and ultimately took over.

So that's why Skies of Arcadia hasn't been ported to Steam yet.

That's actually one of the more fantasy-oriented FF games.

That's what I was going to say. Final Fantasy XII is set in a medieval time period with very little futuristic tech in it. Very similar setting/time period to FF4 and FF9.

FF7 is steampunk, FF12 is not.

You could make the case that Basch/Ashe/Balthier are the main character. Vans is just the narrator.

This is heavily debated in the fandom. I agree with your analogy although I dont consider it a bad thing. Many different plays and books are told from the perspective of the "common man" detailing the roles of the heroes. This is very common in literature.

Van and Penelo are basically "input characters" for the audience. I can see how removing Van and Pen would make a better plot, albeit the gameplay would need to be rebalanced.

For example, make the Guest character slot optional. That way you can put all 4 characters out at the same time and keep one in reserve.

FFXII is more fantasy futuristic than medieval. They have Guns, laser weaponry, nethicite (ie Nukes) and air ship combat.

Matter of fact, a popular theory is that the plot is loosely based on Star Wars.
