That's great. I'm sure there are a bunch of good long snappers that aren't on scholarship. And there are a bunch that are.
LSU happens to usually put a long snapper on scholarship and really likes the Buford, GA pipeline that they've gotten hooked into. If we can use a scholarship on a guy and not have to worry about that position for 4 years, then that's fantastic.
Did your buddy snap at Texas for 4 consecutive years?
We have had 2 players fill this position nearly perfectly for 7 straight year (and will be 8 next year). If Skinner doesn't get hurt, he'll be another one that we will never have to worry about. That will be 12 straight years without having to worry about a snap.

No need to overlap scholarships have two of 85 for long snappers unless the recruit is "bat shite" special. Easy to get a top quality long snapper by just offering a LSU scholarship. I would much rather have some potential like another Justin Jefferson than a duplicate position we have well covered next year Notice Mazza and Fletcher did not overlap on years!
To add to my previous reply, it doesn't matter that they overlap because you just redshirt the younger guy his first year. He's still your starting long snapper for 4 years and you get the benefit not him having a year in the program before you need him.

Yeah. Kinda showing my age. I got my bell rung many times, but I was a stand up DE on D and would return the favor to the OT or TE I was lined up with. I taped up my forearm like a club.

People like you don’t fully understand football. And that’s fine, this is a board full of a good mix. But besides perfect snaps these are the guys who are snapping on that last second field goal. These are the guys who force the return man to shift east and west instead of north and south. Not only do they have to be able to snap, they have to be fast enough to get down the field in the returners face and force him to fair catch or go horizontal.
Also, they have to be able to snap at the perfect angle and it has to get to the punter within a few seconds with a tight spiral.

If message board fans were making choices on players being signed, LSU would be without:
Justin Jefferson
Foster Moreau
Lloyd Cushenberry
and others from the past like:
Russell Gage
Duke Riley
This is an article done by the 24/7 guy (Shea Dixon) who runs the LSU site. It shows that 6 of the lowest rated LSU recruits the last 10 classes have played in the NFL. AND that is with 3 still attending classes at LSU.
This is just the LOWEST rated recruit for each class the last 10 years excluding JUCOs and special teams players - kickers, long snappers, punters.
quote:
2008: Lavar Edwards No. 959 overall prospect, No. 32 in Louisiana
He was a fifth round pick in the NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans
2009: Josh Williford No. 1,066 overall prospect, No. 34 in Alabama
Injuries forced him to call off his football career. He served out his final year on campus as a student coach for the Tigers in 2013.
2010: Alfred Blue No. 66 RB, No. 758 overall prospect, No. 19 in Louisiana
a sixth round NFL Draft selection by the Houston Texans, where he was on roster from 2014-17.
2011: Ronald Martin No. 43 CB, No. 624 overall prospect, No. 24 in Louisiana
signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an unrestricted free agent following the 2015 NFL Draft. He’s since spent time in the NFL with the Seahawks, the New York Jets, the Baltimore Ravens and two stints with the Indianapolis Colts.
2012: Kavahra Holmes No. 86 WR, No. 763 overall prospect, No. 30 in Louisiana
announced he was transferring out of LSU
* A side note, the second-lowest ranked recruit in LSU’s class that year was Jalen Mills, who went on to start immediately as a true freshman at LSU and was a starter in the secondary for the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles this past year.
2013: Duke Riley No. 42 OLB, No. 539 overall prospect, No. 22 in Louisiana
he went on to be selected in the third round of the NFL Draft with the No. 75 overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons.
2014: Russell Gage No. 74 ATH, No. 898 overall prospect, No. 32 in Louisiana
LSU’s Pro Day in April catapulted him up NFL Draft boards, with many mock drafts pointing to Gage as a late-round steal for an NFL team.
2015: Foster Moreau No. 74 TE, No. 1,984 overall prospect, No. 86 in Louisiana
a multi-year starter at tight end who is now one of the team’s veteran leaders - and certainly a name in the mix to take over the No. 18 jersey. Moreau’s slated to start at tight end again for LSU this fall.
2016: Lloyd Cushenberry No. 82 OG, No. 1,522 overall prospect, No. 71 in Louisiana
Fast forward two years and Cushenberry is now the heir apparent to Ethan Pocic and Will Clapp as the team’s next starting center, a position he took the first-team reps at this spring.
2017: Justin Jefferson No. 308 WR, No. 2,164 overall prospect, No. 76 in Louisiana
It appears Jefferson will be a starter for the Tigers during his sophomore season next fall.
And none of these players were ranked in the top 20 at their positions. Even the five that have ALREADY played in the NFL. If Gage gets drafted (HE DID) that will be six of the 10 lowest rated recruits to play in the NFL. With Moreau, Cushenberry and Jefferson still playing at LSU.
Closer Look: LSU's lowest-ranked signees over 10 years
I think I would rather leave those decisions to the coaches.

And the second this kid goes elsewhere on a full ride and a walk on snapper sends one over the holder or punters head you guys will be complaining we don’t have a better snapper.
Or we have a walk-on long snapper and that never happens. That's a possibility as well.

This board is amazing......Last year it was "why are we wasting a scholarship on a transfer kicker"....Well I guess the answer was obvious then but cannot be denied now, so I guess I will trust our the guys who get paid millions of dollars to evaluate the team needs ahead of keyboard warriors!

I get what you're saying, but a long snapper is pretty freaking important. Look at how this season we have an excellent placekicker, KO specialist and punter along with a long snapper who's been perfect so far. I can't remember the last time our special teams were this good. Can you? Let this kid have his scholly!

The noise on this board was near deafening about taking up a scholly in the class for a 1-year kicker.

Special teams alone can win you 2-3 games per year. I’m ok with strengthening them by whatever means the coaches see fit.

with the new rules, and attrition, the numbers are always going to be tight on the 25 "hard cap... with exceptions".
BUT, that means the numbers for the 85 schollie limit will now usually have lots of room.
One of those exceptions is for a walk-on who has been in the program for 2+ years. Which means it doesn't hurt us one bit where numbers are tight (the 25 limit) and uses a scholarship where it would be wasted (the 85 limit).
Makes perfect sense from a numbers standpoint. And don't forget, scholarships are for 1 yr. If, by chance, we get tight on the 85 limit we can remove it the next year.

quote:yep. Put it this way... without a good AND consistent long snapper just go ahead and add at least 10% missed FGs AND 10% shanked punts and see how far your scoring dips and your defense suffers.

There isn't a hard cap at all. Teams can still back count guys the same as they've been able to do in the past. There were some very prominent recruiting guys last cycle who kept spreading this misinformation, probably based on the fact that may only has room for 25 guys.

That's why I quoted it that way. A "hard cap" with "exceptions" is not a hard cap at all.
