...why?

With numbers tight as they are, this just doesn't make sense to me. Before I get the "long snappers are really important to special teams" response, yes, I know they are. But full scholarship worthy?

Forget what his 2* does to our recruiting rankings, he's not even Top 3 at the position. The long snappers ranked ahead of Quentin Skinner are committed to NC State, Indiana, Minnesota and Washington State.

For discussion purposes, do we see Skinner as a full scholarship guy come NSD?

Honestly if we could have our kickoff specialist be a walk on and know we’re going to start him, it would kind of make sense to have the long snapper do the same thing.

I agree.

I feel like LSU needs to tell Skinner he can come on as a preferred walk-on or grayshirt, but if he's looking for a full scholarship, he needs to look elsewhere.

When is the last time a LSU deep snapper sent one over the punters head or dribbled one back on the ground?

Punting starts with the snap.

Quit crying about stars and let the coaches craft their team. They have more to lose than any fan. They have been recruiting Georgia deep snappers for years.

Good deep snappers don’t get lots of stars. But the earn their scholarships

I am. They're already throwing a full-ride at an older brother in JUCO in hopes his little brother doesn't go to Alabama.

With our numbers as tight as they are, we don't need to be giving a full ride to a long snapper who's only other offer is from Southern.

Thanks for playing.

Deep snapping is so fricking simple (for anyone who practices)
In my wildest dreams I never envisioned a full ride being offered only for that. My God what a joke

Commitments go both ways.

LSU has committed to this high school athlete. We are not “ process universally” like Sabin runs.

And the second this kid goes elsewhere on a full ride and a walk on snapper sends one over the holder or punters head you guys will be complaining we don’t have a better snapper.

To where? Southern, his only other offer?

It would be one thing if this kid was some All-World long snapper, but as I said in my OP, he's not even at the top of his position and those ranked above him are committed to joke schools.

What makes you think the "numbers are tight"? The numbers are only tight from the perspective of trying to finish higher in the recruiting rankings. In reality, having an extra spot to pickup an extra high 3/low 4 star probably isn't going to change the future win total at all. Having a quality long snapper or using 2 scholarships for one 5 star defensive tackle is much more likely to have an impact on future wins.

Were you on here complaining about us wasting a spot on a kicker last year too? I think that we should be recruiting kickers, punters, and long snappers as hard as any position on the field and I’m happy that they’re going out and getting great ones. They’re well worth their spots and they contribute as much as any other player in key spots, the momentum swing from a bad snap and blocked punt is huge and you’re spoiled by our great long snappers if you’re forgetting that

I would think this debate would be over with the performance of our s.t. specialist this year. They are important. Look at last year.

Only fans care how many stars the long snapper has.

He's the 4th best in the nation.

Some people see glass half empty, 2 stars.

Some people see glass quite full, 4th best at his skill in entire nation.

Snapping is not the only thing a long snapper does.

The reason we give a scholarship here is like the Ferguson brothers, Skinner can cover punts. Your typical long snapping walk on cant cover for sh*t. It just makes your special teams that much better overall.

I have zero issue using 1 out of 85 scholarships on a long snapper, there's a ton to go around.

For reference, here's a former LSU long snapper we gave a scholarship to:

The Bills decided to use 1 of their 53 roster spots for him...
