I was a student from '99-'05, and it was definitely a thing back then. It wasn't the entire student section, but a few pockets here and there. Probably somewhere around '02-'03 is when I first remember hearing/saying it.

I just moved back from Houston and went to my first game in a long time this past Saturday. Listening to the students was absolutely embarrassing...and I say this as a former hellraiser in the student section who cussed his fair share myself.

It was used sporadically in the late 90s. Certainly was not common though but you did hear some students say it.

Not just in the student section. I had season tickets in the SEZ in '07, and every time Kelvin Sheppard made a tackle, some good ol' boy would say out loud "Why in the hell is Ryan Perriloux playing defense??"
