Have used:
BGE
Royal Oak
B&B
Central Market
HEB
Publix
Cowboy ?
Western

All will work ok. HEB was the worst. Publix burned different from the others.

Currently using Western. Got a 30# bag at Wal-Mart for like $8. Good chunk size. So far, so good. Plan to buy more of it.

Cowboy is shite. Small pieces and a shite load of limestone and other debris in the bag. Will never use cowboy again.

THIS!!!
1 and only bag of Cowboy I bought had half a brick in it. Also seemed to pop at higher temps.

Normally I pick up several bags of Royal Oak from Home Depot when on special. If not Ill get either BGE (re-baged RO but with more chunks) or Rockwood from the local hardware store. The Rockwood seems to burn a little longer I find.

Big Green Egg brand is Royal Oak. I also discovered that the lump charcoal used by my favorite Indian restaurant to fire their tandoor was Royal Oak packaged and distributed under the Gordon Food Service brand.

Fogo is by far the best lump available. They ship for free plus no tax.

Just moved to NC and can't get Royal Oak as conveniently as I used to. Local butcher shop sells this and I'm gonna give it a shot this weekend.

I use Cowboy brand lump charcoal I get at Lowe's, but I recently saw that Central Market here in Dallas carries lump charcoal in smaller bags.

I managed to purchase about 40 boxes of charbroil center cut at academy sports on clearence for 2.48/box.

It's the best lump i've ever used. Genuine high quality with good consistent sized pieces and very clean tasting, which to me is extremely important.

Define "clean tasting." Do you mean no taste?

Yes, no taste or very little taste which i greatly prefer. I prefer to control the smoke flavor myself with wood. I want very little charcoal flavor and on that note, charcoal made from coconut shells is almost perfectly clean but is more expensive than lump.

If you’re doing short cooks you can use cheap lump. If you’re doing a long smoke, Fogo holds temps much longer in a kamado grill.

Agreed.

But this can be done with conventional lump provided: a) you establish a clean burn (evidenced by gray color on the lump) and b) you control the amount of juice runoff from fat rendering, etc.

Yeah, Cowboy brand doesn't provide any flavor. The last time I used it was when I was smoking a leg of lamb with cherry wood. It was my first time using cherry and I didn't want the flavor of the Royal Oak to interfere. But it's low quality and has so many tiny pieces. Royal Oak is better quality and I like the flavor. It doesn't overpower whatever wood I'm smoking with on the smoker and I love using it for direct grilling.
