New to South Louisiana Hunting

My buddy and I are from North Louisiana and are now going to school at LSU and we really want to get into hunting down here. We are thinking about trying out Maurepas for deer hunting but we don't really know where to go for duck hunting. We don't have access to a boat so I assume that will throw places like Venice out of the realm of possibilities. Also after researching about Maurepas, it seems that the duck hunting there is pretty much non existent now which is a shame. Wish us humans didn't try to play God and mess up everything.
I was just wondering if you guys could give me some advice on hunting in the swamps particularly Maurepas and where are some good areas for duck hunting, and no I am not asking for you to tell me where your little honey hole is, but more of where some decent publicland duck hunting is at. Also for duck hunting, we have kayaks and canoes but no boat. Thanks

well sorry to break it to you but the hunting in south Louisiana is shite to what you are probably used to
that's why every campground on public land is full of coonasses north Louisiana folks ain't coming down to hunt in south Louisiana
the fishing is excellent though in the fall and winter

Deer hunting in the swamp is not the easiest thing in the world. Hell, walking in the swamp isn't easy for someone who hasn't done a bunch of it. Imagine dragging a 150lb deer out behind you.
I haven't hunted there in a while, but look into Tunica. The hills aren't what I'm cut out for, but you'll be able to make afternoon hunts there

I’ve heard all about it. I hear no one hunts there and it’s the best public land to go to in South LA. Heard you don’t have to deal with stupid people too

My friend and I did a fair amount of duck hunting on WMAs while we were in school there. Had pretty decent luck at pomme de terre. This was around 2010 and 2011. He had a boat but we mostly walked in or hunted spots close enough to walking in. Late in the season there weren't many people there, as you can expect. And I don't care if i'm giving away spots to internet scouters. I haven't hunted there since 2012 and will probably never again.

LMAO. You're telling him to hunt Sutton Lake in da Parrish?? There's nothing secret about that spot.

How the frick do I know that? I'm neither from there nor live there anymore. Just helping someone out.

Then you really don't want any part of Maurepas, 90% is flooded swamp. Sherburne or Indian Bayou if you bowhunt.

Go back to North LA and hunt. There is a reason why there is a mass migration of South LA natives that invade our turf every year to deer hunt. Join them.
As for ducks, without a boat you are kind of SOL. I would probably repeat the above for ducks too.

Them Bordelonville baws will drill holes in your tires if they catch you hunting in Pomme.

Might be the truest thing you will read on the internet today.

In all seriousness, hunting weekdays, and being willing to drive longer and walk farther than the next guy will be a big help. Look into NWRs, they usually have more restrictive regs regarding what days they are open, shooting hours, etc... and because of that they're often less pressured.
And take what you've heard about Sherburne with a grain of salt - everyone wouldn't be hunting there if it weren't full of game.

My uncle grew up on Belson and we fished, frogged and hunted it a ton growing up. My daddy grew up down the road in Moreauville.
One day someone a couple piers down on Belson shot a hole in the boat of someone else with a 12ga, while there was someone in the boat, because he had stolen from him. They don't mess around.
I also got told to leave schoolboard property near PdT when I was around 10 because I "looked like a city boy from Marksville" and I wasn't welcome there.

Everyone hunts there bc they are to lazy to drive any farther than that. Trust me, there are some committed baws that go there but the guy that hunts less than 20 days a season is going to find out its not worth his time. Every highschooler and college kid from BR and Laffy hunts there... go get em sport, especially without the biggest and baddest sufface drive out there

If it wasn't for coonass hunters our state would be in the top 5 in deer pop and monster bucks. They do exactly what a few have already said and I back up. They have pilfered and killed everything big enough to shoot down south so they invade public WMA campgrounds like its the plaque on weekends. Up here we are sick of em too. So good luck finding anything down there. And most importantly be careful of the coonass hunters. They shoot at any moving bush, brown its down, and you could very well be in the line of fire. BE SAFE.

Some people hunt for meat, and DGAF about spending all season chasing one buck
