Burrow Holding the Ball Too Long

I know the O line needs to give Burrow more time but that's probably not going to improve dramatically in just a week. Burrow has had 3 near fumbles in only 44 attempts. Luckily his arm was moving forward slightly on all 3 but the man has got to make some changes quickly. To beat Auburn, he's going to have to run more, have a clock in his head when he's in the pocket, throw deep 50/50 balls and trust the receivers to either catch it or play defense if underthrown, and lastly he will need to shorten his release. That's a lot to change in one week but I think there is more hope in this happening than a major improvement in pass protection. With all of this said, if struggles, give Brennan a chance.

O-line was arse last week, but you are definitely right about him holding the ball too long at times.

When you watched the film of Saturday, how much of the negative plays were protection-related and how much was it holding the ball too long?
"It was a little of both. It kind of goes hand-in-hand with every single pass play. When protection isn’t great I have to get the ball out of my hands faster. When I hold the ball a little longer they need to be a little firmer up front."

I don't necessarily disagree with what you are saying, but what exactly is a "near fumble"? It sounds similar to a "near touchdown" to me.

almost every good Qb we have had has done this and had to learn and work though it. we saw it with russell, mauck, flynn, etc.

Drew Brees can release the ball in 1.9 seconds. So he’s special.
Most NFL QB’s generally have up to almost 3 seconds before you get pressured or sacked.
In college, you can get by with almost 4 seconds before you get sacked.
Burrow is right on that 3.9-to-4+ second release average. He needs to have a clock go off in his head at about 3.5 seconds.

A near fumble to me is when it's so close that your stuck trusting the officials to make the right decision and if you keep doing it, the near fumbles will soon be fumbles. And, he's going to get his arm ripped off.

Only one of those was close in my book.

I think he better assume he won't have long and get rid of the ball quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Give Brennan a chance on the road at Auburn??? Holy f*ck you’re not serious.

Burrow has also shown the ability to make very fast decisions. In fact, I can count the number of times he held the ball too long on one hand.
And the incompletion where he got hit against Miami was not one of those.

3.5 seconds may have been okay last week but I'm hoping most of his throws are out at 3.0 against Auburn and hopefully get some nice tuck-and-runs to keep them honest.

I got nervous just watching him hold on to it. Give some credit to the coverage on some of that.

Receivers need to get out of jams

We used to bitch about Jefferson having a 2 second clock in his head before he’d tuck it and run. Now it’s we’re holding on to it too long! Lol I agree though. We need to get better at getting the ball out on time, getting open, and pass pro.

I agree that it takes experience and unfortunately Burrow doesn't have much yet. I think he will be very good in time but hoping it will happen faster than with most QB's. It does happen but very rare.

I was totally on board with your post, until the end.

I'd agree. Now Ensminger needs to hold up his half of it and call some plays that help Burrow do just that. I went back and re-watched the Southeastern game. There were plenty of times where their corners were playing well off LSU's WRs, but we never threw any quick routes to them. The one exception was Chase's touchdown, where he made a couple moves to score. That is exactly what they need to be doing. LSU has some playmakers at the WR position. We need to get the ball to them quickly and in space to let them work.

There was a 3rd & 15 and Burrow passed it to Stephen Sullivan, who ran a quick 5 yd comeback. He then proceeded to out-muscle/ stiff arm the DB 10+ yds to get the 1st..... gotta give the WRs the ball and let them make plays especially if DBs were in off coverage.

Haha, yeah I'm not totally on board with that part either but if it gets bad and how seems lost, the worst thing you can do is to just keep everything the same.
