You must be in the same boat as me. Contemplating buying a $700+ rifle to hunt with 2 weeks a year
I still got a smoke pole. If them couple weeks separate me from having deer meat to last me til next year and scrounging for a piece of roast in July, I’m doing something wrong.
That said, as long as you’re not reaching out passed 250 yards, a Whelen is pretty good from what I understand.

I use a .444 crack barrel for most of my rifle hunts. I hunt thick shite though

I know a few who do. Overkill for Deer but very capable out to as far as you can hit them. It's an excellent elk caliber also. I'm a fan and it's the best choice for a louisiana/mississippi rifle since you get 2 extra weeks out of it. You are in no way handicapped deer hunting with a .35 Whelen vs any other caliber.

I bought a CVA Apex 3 years ago for primitive season and haven't used anything else since haha. It's a great round and I'm confident with anything out to 200 yards

Mine kicks like a fricking mule and is heavy as all hell. Forget using that all season.

I use a .35 whelen all gun season except for rare times when I sit a powerline with long range shots possible. Love the caliber and don’t see any reason to change. It makes deer very dead. What specifically are you wanting to know?

I love my CVA crack barrel. I bring it when it’s raining because it is much easier to clean than my Browning auto. It kicks but it is deadly.

I don't find the recoil to be all that bad unless sighting in and shooting back to back to back. I also use 225gr bullets versus the 250gr corelokts I see on the shelf.
That does remind me that probably the only gripe I have about the .35 is finding ammo can be a pain in the arse, and for some reason whelen barrels tend to be picky about what they like. It's a process to find the right ammo then you have to stay stocked up.

Its all I use. When you shoot a deer with it, theres no tracking involved
i love mine.

I would hold out for a CVA. Usually not a big difference in price but a much better built gun.

35 whelen needs to be banned from the "primitive" weapons class.

I don’t have one. It is basically a .35-06. The .30-06 opened up to a .35 caliber. That’s a solid killing caliber.

Only on the OB (where all you need is a .223 out to 500 yds) is the 35 overkill

It’s my favorite weapon when I get tired of sitting and walk the woods

Like someone said above, for hunting in the woods the 35 Whelen is a no brainer. Mine is a CVA Scout. Small, light, and stainless steel. I've been using a 180gr Barnes TTSX load that I get from Double Tap Ammo. Its pricey, but a good load for deer.

Well, it is. It's a good bit of recoil to deal with for killing a deer. I've shot a few of them and none of them were pleasant. Not magnum abusive by any stretch, but much less pleasant than say .270 or .308
