Teddy Bridgewater: "I don't mind waiting behind Brees"

NEW ORLEANS -- New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur recently advised to not sleep on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
The New Orleans Saints were apparently listening and watching before sending a 2019 third-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for Bridgewater and a sixth-round pick.
"He is an outstanding kid -- well, he is not a kid anymore -- but he has a great football IQ and we liked how he played in the preseason," Saints head coach Sean Payton said Thursday night. "We think a player like that is valuable and we are excited to have him."
Bridgewater has endured quite a journey since suffering a career-threatening knee injury in August 2016 while with the Minnesota Vikings. In May 2017, the Vikings elected to not exercise a fifth-year option on Bridgewater, a first-round pick in 2014, making him a free agent in 2018 and he signed a one-year deal, which pays a base salary of $5 million, with the Jets in March.
While he impressed through three preseason games, Bridgewater wasn't going to supplant first-round pick Sam Darnold as the starter in New York. And he finds himself in a similar situation with the Saints when considering the presence of Drew Brees.
But Bridgewater, who has 28 career starts and made the Pro Bowl in 2015, is excited for the opportunity to absorb knowledge from a future Hall of Famer and be a member on one of the league's elite offensive units.
"I have been following this offense since I was in college and to be a part of it now is a great feeling," Bridgewater said Thursday night. "You watch the tape and look at the numbers and things like that, and you say, 'Wow, it is a unique opportunity to be a part of something like that.'
"For me, I do not mind waiting. I get to learn from one of the best players to ever play this game and get to be in the room with a great group of guys. I get to learn from coach Payton also, so I look forward to that."

Man, I've been waiting for a statement from Teddy.
This sounds good.

But he didn't say that.
He sounds like he's looking forward to soaking up information.

It would be wise for him to learn under CSP & Brees for a year or 2. This is a very QB-friendly offense that can get the most out of his talent.

Two Super Bowls in a row for Brees then retirement and the Teddy Era begins.

Someone tweeted, and maybe it was just them theorizing, that Teddy would wait, but not necessarily for 2 years.
Which made me wonder if there is going to be "pressure" for this to be Drew's last season if we end up liking what we see from Bridgewater. Not suggesting we'd push Drew out the door, but if this guy is for real, what are the odds that we can keep him waiting for 2 seasons?

Very good if we can extend his contract.

If he's not going to start for 2 years, will we?

Yeah, tear up the current contact and sign him for 3 years 25 million. Give him 15 of it up front. Of course that's after a few months eyeballing him and seeing him progress in the offense.

At any other position...I'd say no. I think we would make an exception in this case though.

I'm just thinking of what HE'D want to do. Like my first post, he's willing to wait, but for how long?

Beyond this year is 100% a pipe dream

I think both sides will have a much better feel for the situation after he's practiced with us in 2018.
He might not like it here or he could love it here. We might not think he's the future or we might fall in love with him.
It would be nice if we got Brees' successor for a 3rd round pick. I assumed that was going to cost us like 2 1st round picks at least. The draft is the best way to find a legit QB, but it's also the best way to set the franchise back by drafting a bust.

Well this year is cheap. Next year is the hangup. It could be messy or very clean.
Does Drew retire or play next year? Does Teddy take less money for one year (with maybe incentives for starts if he does play) but starter money the rest of the contract? Do we give him just a one year extension if Brees stays? Do we franchise him if Brees stays?
Lots of variables, but it will get worked out so I'm not worried.

CSP mentioned TB's relationship with Parcells.
Here's an article that supports that relationship.

It's not out of the realm of possibilty to think that Parcells is advising TB and CSP in this matter and that the plan is for TB to take over the reigns when Brees retires, even if it takes 2 seasons to get there.
Hill showed a lot of progress this preseason. If our long term Brees replacement plan is Bridgewater and Hill, that's not a bad option, especially with the defense and running game that continues to be built.

Parcells was struck by Bridgewater's maturity and winning personality. They stayed in touch over the years, with Parcells checking up on him through Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, one of his coaching proteges. In March, Parcells met Bridgewater for lunch in Jupiter, around the time he signed with the Jets. He believes Bridgewater still has the ability to do special things, if his knee is right.

I went to a Seahawks / Vikings game a few years ago when the Vikings were playing at the Gophers' stadium while US Bank Palace was being built.
It was fun as the Vikings fans chanted "Ted-dy! Ted-dy!". Then he threw 3 INT's and Seattle won like 42-13 and nobody was chanting that anymore.

Drew threw 5 picks against the falcons.
I guess we have better fans.

Teddy is a really good, all american type of guy, how people can compare him to a Aaron Brooks is a joke to me. LOL He is the opposite, a young guy that wants to be great, he'll soak up everything he can while around Drew Brees and will be fully invested in everything Sean Payton is teaching him. He'll take his time and get that knee super strong and will be a solid backup and teammate to Brees for the next 2 seasons I think. Then he'll be the guy to take the Saints into the future and it will be exciting. He's also the opposite of both arrogant Cam Newton and idiotic Jameis Winston, I look forward to seeing him outduel both of those clowns. LOL
