It kinda side steps the issues of power, age and coercion.
Rape isn't just about violence, it's also about psychological control and holding power.
I would argue that an adult woman would have more sway and influence over a teenage male than an adult male with a teenage female and it being why violence is not a common factor in these stories.

If a 35 year old leading man would ask their 17 year old daughter to come to their hotel room and then had sex with them, I’m guessing their response would be different.
Yep.

It's still a kid's brain in an adult body and that adult body isn't even really that adulty yet on average.
At 17? Meh.
But, it sounds like she was grooming him for a quasi oedipal relationship from a young age. He probably felt like he just had sex with his aunt.

17 year old guy? You can join the military at 17.
The military is basically a glorified boot camp for people at that age.

And the article calls him a kid?
Yes.
17 year olds are still kids at that age even though their body may look like an adult.
I remember when I was 17, I still had a hell of an immature mindset with not much of a worldview and really didn't know a damn thing at all.
I'm almost 30 and I'm just a few years removed from my brain being fully developed and my mindset being fully fleshed out.

Uh yes they can.
An erection from a man is not and will never be consent. That is merely a biological function in response to friction on the body.
Just like women getting wet and enlarged vaginas during a rape should never be confused with consent.
If the 17 year old boy truly feels like he was violated and did not give consent, then we have no business mocking him for it. Not everyone agrees with your view of sexuality.

At 17? Meh.
You're saying meh when they're just a year away from voting in state and federal elections.
When I was 17, I thought Bobby fricking Jindal was the greatest thing since sliced bread and was going to save the world.

Especially so considering that he played her son in a movie.

That's how retarded someone can be at 17 years old and why they're still kids in an adulty body. The fact they're allowed to vote just one short year later is an absolute indictment on our society.
And btw, Bobby Jindal's abandonment of Louisiana really turned me off to wonder boy type politicians and really made me a hell of a lot more cynical to anyone claiming to be a savior of sorts.

Sounds like an opportunity presented itself to cash in on a woman who had gone on record accusing a man of the same thing she did to the 17 year old. She must be a democrat.
To get a blow job, screwed, lunch and $350K, it doesn’t get any better than that. This is total bullshite. If the guy is really upset he’s gay.

It's a real boot camp. Nothing glorified about it.

Nope. Because the argument is specious.
No parent wants their offspring having sex no matter if they are 22.
But 17 year old males aren't kids...like the article posited.
Our parents use to get married at 17...with a bun in the oven.

17 year olds have been considered adults throughout almost all of human history and treated as such.
17 year olds (and much younger) have worked in the fields and factories, fought and died in wars.
Society treating teenagers as "kinda sorta adults but not really" is a very recent phenomenon in human civilizations.
Humans are the only species on the planet where someone is sexually mature (from a biological standpoint) yet magically supposed to not act on their sexual urges for like 6 years, it's rather absurd.
I think people are cross arguing about two different topics though.
I think most people agree that a 17 year old CAN consent to sex legitimately. The issue is whether or not he DID consent. If he legitimately did not consent, then it's assault. If he did consent, he's old enough that his consent is valid. Nobody really knows what went down in that hotel room beyond their claims.

Do some of yall not remember what it was like to be 17? I hate this line of thinking.
Do you not know how the brain works? Development? Emotional maturity?
Has porn warped our society that bad? Have we lost all sense of moral right and truth?
There is an emotional and romantic component to sex. And as a teenager and probably a virigin this kid was confused and out of place and taken advantage of by a sick perverted person in a place of power.
You can absolutely rape a young kid without his consent. And you can absolutely cause all kinds of stress and emotions he does not know how to deal with.
As a middle aged adult, I would know how to handle that situation and can make a decision from a place of sexual and emotional maturity. As a scared kid, it is easy to understand how he can feel abused and taken advantage of.
Some of you all need to grow up.

Yes they are. In today's society they absolutely are.
They have not been working the fields and watching their siblings die in the winter since they were 8 anymore. They are living at home and going to high school and playing video games.
17 year olds absolutely have the mental capacity to mature earlier based on the circumstances, but those circumstances largely do not exist in America anymore
To pretend a 17 year old from pre-industrial revolution or that faught in WWII and a 17 year old today are the same is asinine and intellectually dishonest.

That was most 17 year-old boys' fantasy when I was 17.

This is a great point. Our 17-year-olds have 10 times the knowledge, 10 times the sexualization and 5% of the responsibility of 17-year-olds from a century ago.

My parents would've whipped my arse if they even suspected that I would do something crazy like this at that age.
My parents are the ones that got married at 24 and my mom was already nervous as hell seeing my older sibling get married at 26 to a 28 year old.
Worldviews and what's socially acceptable change with time.

I agree.
But responsibility and purpose are what drive maturity. Look at the state of our society now. People are getting out of college at 23 without ever having purpose or responsibility in their lives and they are running around like toddlers screaming and crying about the most mundane things with no ability to back it up. Because they never matured. They never needed to. And so they are thrust into adulthood without the necessary maturity and capacity to handle it. It is a very large problem in this country.
