quote:

Excitement for the aluminum rolling mill has been buzzing since the company announced in April 2017 it would locate in the region.

"This is probably the greatest feeling I've had in a while, since my children were born," Greenup County Judge Executive Bobby Carpenter said. "But this is seeing everything come together that we worked so hard for and the people in Greenup and Boyd and all of this area deserve it. I'm just glad to be part of it."

Carpenter was among the guest speakers at the ceremony for the groundbreaking that brought hundreds to East Park.

The company says the construction phase will generate up to 1,800 jobs, both union and nonunion.

CEO Craig Bouchard expects many of those jobs to be locally filled.

Why is the electricity they are buying @ low cost?

Its coal country.

The Canadian aluminum factory uses electricity from Niagara.

This is a weird sad story. References the addiction and unemployment in Appalachia.

there are two idled aluminum plants in Texas, one in Gregory and the other near Point Comfort. I wonder if those will be starting up soon.

Bouchard formed the company in 2016 before Trump won the presidency. The site selection and announcement of the plant were made prior to the tariffs. The tariffs will improve the economics of the plant, however, they aren't the reason for the plant.

This article says only 550 will be hired.

And the tax $ handouts:

quote:

To help fund the project, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has preliminarily approved Braidy Industries for tax incentives up to $10 million through the Kentucky Business Investment program.

And this:

quote:

Bevin said "bottom line, Kentucky is investing $15 million in this deal.” He said if the company reaches its goals, the state’s investment could be worth as much as $250 million.

I love this qoute:

quote:

“When you’re managing revenues, which will be $1.5 billion out of this facility, and 550 people working as a team, you have to be efficient. Move quick … Throw all those work rules out. Labor unions are somewhat restrictive with those things,” said Bouchard, whose lengthy business resume includes executive positions and ownership of aluminum and steel manufacturing companies, banking and software development.

Although the Braidy Industries website states, "With plant construction underway, we are looking for people to join the Braidy Industries team," it's hard to find any pics of actual construction at the site. The groundbreaking was on June 1st, nearly two months ago.

Couple this with Gov. Bevin's hesitancy to declare his intentions to run for reelection, " Bevin undecided on re-election, still fundraising for previous campaign, and an odious aroma begins to settle around the project. Something may be rotten in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
