Smith is a story on his own, regardless of whether it relates to Urban.
The relationship with a staffer, especially if she was fired, is an issue. Ask Bobby Petrino how sexual relations with staffers go.
The receipt of sex toys at the office...well, that's a little off for most people. Again, even if Urban had no idea, Smith looking like the office perv at a high profile program is a legit news story, especially with Smith's DV issues.
It isn't too personal for a reporter to report on stuff most organizations would find newsworthy these days.
