Emotional Support Dogs Everywhere in Athens

Baws, I’ve been in Athens, GA for less than a week (moved from Baton Rouge), and I have already seen 4 emotional support dogs (each of them at the UGA rec center).
Now, how do I know they’re not service animals for the handicapped or ex-military? Well, considering that the owners have all been young, able-bodied women around the age of 20, I’m willing to bet none of them served overseas.
I like seeking a beautiful golden retriever as much as the next guy. But seriously, what the frick?
Apparently, Baton Rouge is a tougher town than some of us give it credit.
ETA: Apparently I jumped the gun on this one.

whats wrong with a service dog?

Nothing.
I can't remember correctly, but UGA might be a university that trains service dogs. I know a handful have programs in place.

There’s a difference between a “service dog” and a “emotional support dogs”
A service dog is trained for such and has papers to help its handler with a true disability.
An emotional support dog is much easier to get. Anyone can label their dog as such if you go online and chat with a psychologist and pay them $200. However, it’s truely intended for someone who has anxiety (real anxiety) but doesn’t necessarily have a disorder or disability.
“ESA” (emotional support animals) have caught a lot of flack lately bc of this princess women getting their “princess dogs” (I call them do nothing dogs) labels as an ESA and it’s a bunch of shite.
I do believe there is a time and place for an ESA though.

Does this bother you? If so, let it go.

The presence of the dog itself does not bother me (assuming it’s well-trained and an appropriate breed).
It’s the underlying premise of an emotional support animal that needs to accompany you throughout the day that is laughable.

Ask them would they like to go? Honestly Hot 20 year old with a dog? I'd be talking to them instead of posting

Well yeah, with all those murders and robberies it's definitely a tougher town than Athens.

Aren't all pets emotional support animals by their very nature? I think the label is dumb and hurts people who carry their pets with them for real physiological/psychological needs.

I think that’s kind of the point.. that many just use it as a way to take their dog everywhere.
