I'm in Birmingham, AL for a conference on opioids

Was appointed by ex-Gov Bentley to serve on an executive committee "opioid addiction and abuse", but quit as these paper pushers were ineffective bureaucrats.
Been pushing to legalize medical pot for a couple years. Tomorrow I get an opportunity to speak at a conference "From Silos to Solutions".
My three main suggestions:
A) Medical Pot
B) Ending jail/incarceration for drug users
C) Decriminalizing all drugs
Aim for the sun (decriminalize), get to the moon (medical marijuana). States with med pot have a 15-30% less overdose death rate, which would equate to between 120-240 less overdose deaths in AL last year.
Alabama is much closer than you would think at medical marijuana becoming a reality.

Wow. Interesting and profound stat.

Do we want to decriminalize all of the drugs? I try to envision what would happen if this happened - I really don't know.

Good luck!! I hope you open some eyes.

Well, it's what Portugal did in 2000 faced with a similar epidemic. They had a HUGE AIDS crisis on their hands due to needle sharing.
18 years later, they have the LOWEST drug addiction rate in all of Europe.
And, they are one of the more conservative countries in Europe, so it can be done despite a conservative culture.

But it might only be effective given a conservative culture

Portugal decriminalized drugs 15 or so years ago, and their rates of overdose and addiction have fallen. Drug use should be treated as a public health issue. Trafficking should still be the purview of the police.

I literally just wrote a paper 2 weeks ago on how decriminalizing marijuana would lead to fewer opioid overdoses and deaths.
Good luck. Doing the Lord’s work.

Good thing. The only thing that could make being in Alabama for a conference bearable is being in Alabama for a conference on opioids.

It’s kinda made up. But it is profound.

Well, states with medical marijuana have a 15-30% less death rate from opioid/heroin overdoses.
800 people died last year from overdoses in AL.
Equals 120-240 people/year.
Causation?
Correlation?
Doesn't fricking matter in my opinion.

Bentley would probably shite himself if he knew that was your position.

Lol.
He read my op-ed last year and his director of public policy, David White, called me, so I presume he knew my position.
But all those frickers on the committee are so worthless.

As as more states legalize/decriminalize marijuana, the effects on overdoses decreases. Correlation? Causation?
We should do something. This is something. Ergo: do this.

How are those grouped together exactly? Doesn’t seem like they would be mutually exclusive.
One thing which has amazed me however is how seemingly educated people are the ones leading the charge for legalization. Not some pothead surfer that says “radical” every third word.

Sounds like you are a gotdamn moron. There is zero benefit to medical marijuana, other than the strains high in cannabinols and low in THC. Getting high wont fix shite. You will just end up with people hooked on opiods and marijuana. A better proposal would be to shut down a bunch of shitty Drs handing out opiods like gotdamn candy.
