That would have to be my top three. I think. Maybe.

Honorable mentions would be Jason Isbell and Langhorne Slim.

As far as songwriting for bands in general...

Lord Huron, The National, Dawes, and maybe old Mumford & Sons.

This is a spur of the moment list. Who do you got?

You exclusively listen to bands fronted by dudes with acoustic guitars?

Lord Huron, The National, Dawes

I agree with all these, with Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes being the best

Great list. I have Ben Schneider from Lord Huron at the top right now.

Love The National but Matt Berninger has pretty much admitted his lyrics are just disconnected thoughts and often times drunken gibberish.

Schneider's stuff is so cohesive and telling

Definitely agree on Pug

5 years ago I might have agreed on Dawes but I seem to be the only one that is completely bored by their last few efforts.

This thread seems to be mainly about the latest generation of songwriters, so of those:

Conor Oberst
Josh Tillman (Father John Misty)
Jason Isbell
Damien Rice
Josh Ritter
Ryan Adams

But obviously people like this are still "on the planet":

Bob Dylan
Paul Simon
John Prine
Roger Waters
Van Morrison

Another new world by josh Ritter might be one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever created

Not sure about best on the planet. But the best most people have never heard of is Ray LaMontagne.
