Are We Beginning to See The End of Emulator/Rom Sites?

Honestly, a little surprised this hadn't happened sooner, but Nintendo fired the first shot, filing a lawsuit against LoveRETRO and LoveROMS

LoveRETRO shut down its site, while LoveROMS removed all of its Nintendo roms.
I know we've seen the same thing with torrent sites in the past as that field has been cut down (PirateBay is the only worthy free one I know that's up), so is this the start of the ROM decline?

Nintendo ROMs are ridiculous to get outside a torrent.

I'm scared of them going after the rando tournaments. Those things only exist by using roms and Link to the Past is by far one of the most popular ones and I like watching the tournaments of it.

No, the Switch emulator CEMU and the PS3 emulator RPCS3 are very very popular.
You can play Breath of the Wild on CEMU at 60 FPS on PC and at up to 4K resolution. There's a texture pack that is killer for it as well.

Why now though? Nintendo isn't even selling the old ROMs on current hardware these days.

The lawsuit should be hilarious when Nintendo tries to claim that ROM sites affected NES Classic sales, when the NES Classic was limited to a production run of only tree fiddy total units.

I don't view emulation as piracy. This is not as if we are attempting to download a PS4 game, burn it to a blu-ray and pop it in our system. Usually what we are talking about here is the ability to play and/or replay decades old games, some of which are very hard to find or very pricey.

You’re wrong on this one. Where the rom sites fricked up was by profiting through advertising and then by attempting to charge for certain emulators. Had they been providing roms for the sake of playing decades old games, Nintendo probably wouldn’t have cared. Instead they tried to make a profit selling Nintendo owned product. That’s bullshite.

I think Nintendo’s anal obsession with piracy comes from a few experiences they had earlier in their life.
The Famicon Disc Drive games were apparently pirated to hell and back which is partly why they never came to the US.
They also had enough piracy issues with megacarts during the SNES days to put some boobytraps in a few games if they detected they were emulated. Earthbound is notorious for ramping up the difficulty throughout the whole game then fatally freezing during the final boss fight and wiping the save files if someone happened to push through the enemy hordes.

Obviously, I can't go on either site anymore, but charging for emulators seems hard to believe when they're so readily available for free.
The ads I have no problem with. Most ROM sites that I've used do have ads. Hosting a website isn't cheap.
Emuparadise has been my go to site for ROM files for awhile now, but it does seem like it's harder than it used to be to find a good ROM website that won't fill your computer with AIDS.
