Non-compete contracts

I’m a Project Estimator for a commercial handy man company (do a little bit of every thing except break ground). Does anyone have any knowledge if a non-compete contract would prevent me from going to another construction company that focuses on slightly different projects as a Project Manager?

My guess is the non-compete is while you are employed with your current company (aka moonlighting). If you left your current position to take another job, I don't see a non-compete being valid.
ETA: The max it could do is prevent you from bidding on a project for the new company that you had previously worked on the bid with the old company.

^^^ What he said. I think they use those to prevent mass exodus if a competitor tries to lure the whole work fore away.

This thread is short and already full of bad advice from people that don't understand not complete agreements. Seek competent counsel from a legal expert in the relevant jurisdiction.

The only way non-compete really hold merit is if you are the business owner and sell your business. The new owners may make a non-compete to prevent the old owner from opening a new business to directly compete with it's old business.

You have the constitutional right to work where you please.
This is just my opinion, BTW.

There is one seriously triggered/butt-hurt poster in this thread.
They are downvoting nearly every post.

But they don't have a Constitutional right to hire you.

What state do you live in? Alabama being a right to work state - they're pretty enforceable. We just hired a guy that had one (unbeknownst to him) and we received a cease and desist letter within the week of his hire. So we had to release him and his former employer would not hire him back. Take the advice of seeking legal counsel before jumping ship.

But once they do hire you, you have the constitutional right to quit and work elsewhere.

Your getting ahead of yourself. The first rule is that they DO NOT have to hire you.
