Having to take Hwy 90 to Biloxi because the interstate system was not complete.
THIS.
Both parents were from Biloxi, and we took that trip often (as well as trips further eastward to Gulf Shores and Florida). It's like you can chart the history of the 70s by portions of I-10 opening up:
early 70s-- open only to just past state line (now Stennis exit with the welcome center). Had to take 90 through Waveland and Bay St. Louis
mid-70s -- open to Gulfport, then shortly after to Lorraine/Cowan Road (Power Plant exit).
mid/late 70s -- open to Biloxi, but I-110 only open to south shore of Back Bay.
late 70s -- open to just before Alabama State line (Alabama portion to Mobile had already opened)
late 80s (1987) - I-110 in Biloxi opened from Back Bay to beach/Hwy 90.
I also remember when they were building the I-10 Mobile Bay crossing bridge sometime in the late 70s, first time I rode on it was going to spring break in 1983.
Highway 90 along the beach in Mississippi is such a fun and picturesque drive. When I have time, I prefer to take that route for awhile rather than boring I-10.
