Anybody Worried About CSP Abandoning the Running Game Early This Season

I'm fearful that with Ingram out for the first 4 weeks that Payton will fall back into the habit of bailing on the run game early? I think unless Kamara or someone else has a lot of success in the first quarter I think we're gonna see a lot of 5-wide on 3rd and 1.

I think CSP will be smart with his choices. It may also mean that another back gets 15+ carries as I do not see CSP as being the type that is going to load up on Kamara especially early in the season.
The side package of that is the fact that Brees is on the verge of breaking a few records. So is it possible that CSP wants Brees to throw for a few yards in Games 1-4 so the records are broken at home.

He's got a Kamara...
Running game will be fine..

I can only see that happening in 2 situations:
-The other team stacks the box & makes us beat them through the air. Carolina tried this last year & it didn't work out very well for them. The Vikings tried it in the playoffs & Brees tore them up.
-Our defense has a horrible game & we are forced to try & put up a lot of points in a short amount of time.

quote:This is what should happen. My fear is that it doesn't. Payton has shown a propensity for giving up on the run early when it's not producing. And even though Kamara appears to have what it takes to be an every-down back he's obviously a passing-game threat making it even easier for Payton to prop the team up on the passing game if the running game is limping.
It may also mean that another back gets 15+ carries
I'm hoping he gives AK every chance to show everyone that he's a feature back that I think he can be. If Payton can be patient I think there's an opportunity for him to join that Top 5 group of RBs early this season.

Agreed

I'd be surprised if CSP even factors this into his decisions. We'll probably do whatever gives us the best chance to win. Nothing would be more pathetic (for CSP) to lose a game b/c he's trying to manipulate when/where Brees breaks records.

I think Sean already think's this. But I don't think he wants to over use him which aint necessarily a bad thing. Why give him starter carriers when you don't really have to?The more he uses AK the more predictable he will get. We've seen this over and over with Seans favorite targets.

I doubt CSP will over use AK. He already said that he wasn't planning on doing so. I think he wants to always have another RB to compliment AK, so he can have AK as an option for 10 years.
AK is basically the perfect satellite RB that CSP has been looking for, & he finally found him in the 3rd round. CSP is going to try & keep him around for a while...if possible.
I think he's seen what happens to RB's that get run into the ground early in their career. Obviously there are exceptions, but the majority of RB's become much less effective after they reach a certain amount of touches. Kind of like Matt Forte. He was a top 5 RB & then just fell off a cliff.

Oh no! Brees will have to throw the ball. What ever will we do? lol

If our O line stays healthy (which I fully expect) I’m not too concerned about abandoning the run too early. AK and the other guys will have enough running room to stick with it.

I think there will be a healthy mix of running and passing for the first 4 games. Maybe a little more pass happy in the Atlanta game but I do somewhat have that fear as well. Prime example of this was the redskins game last year. Even though they couldn't stop the run game we still went pass heavy a lot in the second half when we didn't need to but we ultimately won that game so water under the bridge. Always seemed to me anytime we get down by around 10 no matter how much time is left in the game we shift to a more pass happy offense. Nothing wrong with that but sometimes I'd like us to grind the clock some more with the run game while making up some ground. I think AK will get a more featured role with the occasional sub or 2 back set but not enough to put some wear on the treads early on. Regardless I think all will be fine and think will make it out of the stretch without Ingram at 4-0 or 3-1

What is with Saints fans and their obsession with running the damn ball? Short completions with dominant/versatile players at the skills positions is basically as effective as a good running game. Actually, it's more effective and extremely difficult to stop, just not many teams can execute it.

The only time I get worried about all that is at the end of the 1st quarter we are down 7-3 and have been held to 15 yards rushing

quote:Our most successful seasons have come when CSP dedicates himself to running the ball. It shortens the game, wears out the other teams D, and gives our D a chance to rest between drives. Nothing bad has ever come from a productive running game. On the other hand Drew can throw for 5,000 yd and the Saints can go 7-9.
What is with Saints fans and their obsession with running the damn ball?

I agree with that statement. How also though do you explain the 2014 (I think) season when we had a killer start to the season and we had around 50 yards rushing every game?
I think pass heavy can still win games, it's just hard to maintain over the course of a full season. You still gameplan to your strengths and the opposing teams weaknesses.
I think for starting the season out we may need to be a bit more pass heavy without Ingram. Still think when he comes back CSP will run the ball again. One thing I am interested to see is how our Oline does this year. If those guys are real good then just about anyone can run through the gaps.

He can manipulate it when we’re up 31-0 at halftime against the Skins.

Started 1-3 that year.

quote:It can and sometimes it has to. MI and AK saw a lot of stacked fronts at the end of last season and the passing game came up strong as usual. The Wild Card game comes to mind as a great example.
I think pass heavy can still win games
However, it seems to me that it's just easier when the ground game is productive or at least existent.
quote:I hope he doesn't wait until MI is back. I say give AK and whoever else steps up enough carries to keep them in a rhythm and out of 3rd and long.
Still think when he comes back CSP will run the ball again

If Sean gets the virus again, I’m going to break several TVs.
“Run the ball, Sean. Oh God, why? JUST RUN THE BALL! HOLY shite, SEAN!!! WTF ARE YOU DOING? RUN THE GODDAMN BALL!” Punt...

I mean Alvin Kamara is 5’10 215 lbs....literally the exact same measurements as Ladanian Thomlinson....he did ok. He will be absolutely fine touching the ball 20 times a game.
