Is this really the “best World Cup ever” like Fox claims?

I’m a casual fan asking the real fans.
Seems like it’s great if you’re a EuroFan. But the case against it.
*No Italy, No Netherlands, No USA
*All-European semis, 3 of the 4 are miles from each other
*Germany sent home early
*Spain, Ronaldo, Messi out early
*South America eliminated in the quarters
The case for it
*Russia Cinderella Run
*Return of England and France
*Belgium semifinal run
*Lots of drama
*Defending champs elimnated early
*Mbappe
Opinions?

Italy and Netherlands, yes. I doubt anyone outside the U.S. cares that USA is out. They are a 2nd rate team anyway.
Croatia is the only European team left. The other 3 are basically Africans posing as European.

bullshite the amount of shite thrown my way bc we didn’t make it was insane
Pretty much the default argument of anyone debating an American will be you didn’t even make the last World Cup

Cash, I thought you was a England fan? And that it was coming home? What the hell?

Maybe I'm a prisoner of the moment, but it's much more exciting than 2014, not accounting for the lack of the USA.
Maybe it's just the team's I was rooting for the most, Denmark and Croatia, had some good games.

I'm biased but Germany taking Brazil to the Woodshed was my favorite soccer moment ever.
But then again, I don't really remember anything specific from it.

It's been the most entertaining one that I can remember. I vividly remember every cup since 2002, can only remember a few pieces of 1998.
Outside of the US not being in it, I only care about the games being interesting. I don't care which "stars" are still around or which continent the countries are from.

It is not. There have been some exciting games, but I genuinely think the play was much better last time.
I have missed quite a few good games due to work, though.

It’s been phenomenal. There have only a few shite games (the meaningless France-Denmark fixture was the worst, and I believe that’s the only 0-0 match).
People are saying it’s the best simply due to the excitement of the games itself. There have been a record number of goals in the dying minutes (I saw an infographic showing all the last minute goals and it blew away the other WC).
Think about some of the great matches like the 3-3 Spain-Portugal opener, Belgium’s comeback over Japan, etc.
I heard the only other one in contention would be France 1998.

It would have made it more interesting over here, and I'm sure they are a pretty polarizing team in many parts of the world.

Scoring is down from the last World Cup. There have been some late heroics and a lot of shootouts, but there were also some horrific games where a win was salvaged due to a penalty kick or an own goal.

I dont think the quality of play has been that great... but pure entertainment value is up there with anything that I remember...

90 and 94 were really good and I liked 98 and 06 better than this one. Fox is selling their product.

It certainly has a lot of late drama. But quality attacking play has been lacking, though there have been some great goals.
Overall it's been a fun tournament.

Shocked no one has mentioned this part of your shite comment.

Darijo Srna would cry at this comment.

Because it doesn't really merit a response.

Again, casual here--but that Spain/Russia match was the most horrific, mind-numbingly boring, stereotypical "this is why I hate soccer" match I have ever seen.

It actually makes him seem more authentically croatian, fwiw
As for the question from OP, it's good, but the time difference sucks for the US. Plus playing games on Fri/Sat is shitty.

Well yeah that was Spain being really stupid with their approach.
In contrast, Spain's 3-3 game with Portugal was one of the all-time great WC games.
In general, there has been few players willing to take games on and risk making mistakes. There has been a lack of incisive passing except for a few exceptions. This is to be expected, especially in the knockout stage. Add to that that international football is fluid than the club game means that the cautious approach can yield huge dividends.
