So a guy who has businesses worldwide doesn't understand global trading? So a guy whose book is titled the Art of the Deal has no idea how global trade works?

Also, this sounds like a small order and the size of order with required specification probably has most mills shying away.

Yes it is somewhat small, ~220,000 lbs. But we had yet to send the RFQ to Dillinger yet, we called them first to discuss the scope of the order. That is when they told us they are not selling to US based companies that require the material to be shipped to the US at this time.

There will be short term pain to get to the point where we can have a long term level playing field. I wouldn't deal with that German mill ever again and let all your competitors know what they did.

Short term. Long term it will either lead to better trade deals, or the demand for these products will lead to a rise in US companies producing them.

The OP shows the problems with outsourcing manufacturing overseas. What happens if we get into a major war with a country down the road that produces most of our needed raw materials? Would be difficult to manufacture our military goods with hardly no domestic raw material production

Honest question that has been brought up by others...
Is there no workaround thru Mexico or Canada where they order and ship there, then truck it in

Not exactly, because the tariffs apply to Mexico and Canada as well.

However what we can do is have the plate rolled into cylinders out of the country by a subcontractor and then have the cylinders shipped to us, that way they are considered a “fabricated product” rather than raw steel and can get around the tariff, and that is likely what we will do.

RFQ and inform us that they must regret the quote as they cannot produce material to meet the specified mechanical properties at this thickness.

Sounds like engineering needs to go back and redesign the product with available materials.

he interrupts in his heavy German accent and asks if this is to be shipped to the US and we say yes, so he cuts us off and says they are not selling any steel which is to be shipped to the US, period.
No sales rep in the history of sales reps is going to turn down a bunch of commission. If there were some official German policy freezing steel shipments to us that would be a different story, but that would be in the news. Also, have you considered that maybe you just suck at finding steel?

I don't get it. Maybe he has some end game that I can't see but this is just really crappy economics

Maybe it's just a narcissistic Entertainer who is in over his head because he thinks he's the greatest deal maker in all of history.

If he has an actual endgame it would seem most likely that the endgame is to help consolidate power between friends and interests of his. Puts the small guys out of business and then when the tariffs go away the big guys have more business

Have you considered that you’re an ideological nutsack that can’t pull your head out of your arse long enough to realize the world is more complicated than your simple little black and white view?

Look I’m just as surprised as you are, that’s why I started the thread, and I have probably purchased in the neighborhood of $10 million worth of steel in my career so get fricked with your “suck at finding steel” bullshite.

I’m from a farming family. The tariffs are killing bean and corn prices too. My family has, by in large, supported Trump and likely will continue, but the trade war is gonna cause some casualties.

Yeah, that's not a lot of steel. Can the engineers design around a new spec? Might be able to avoid these procurement issues.

hey, you're the one who let a sales rep shut you down. Did you even ask to talk to his sales manager or higher? Maybe you've lost your edge and should consider hanging it up?

In a second a poster named NardDogg is going to call bullshite and tell you that your family just doesn’t know how to sell their crops on the global market.
