I see what y'all are saying...
I think it's simply something to keep them focused as they kill people instead of thinking about killing people. It's kind of a fricked up scene when you think about how easily they do it.

It’s my favorite scene of the whole movie and I believe it might even have a tiny bit of realism to it. Yes they were only children, but this was a different time when children weren’t as sheltered as they are now. They knew what was going to happen to their brother and also what just happened to their other brother. This was a way to help him.
