All of this supports my point that expectations are lower (and should be) than the norm of 10-2.
I think the last few pages have just been an exercise in semantics.
Expectations for this program shouldn't be lower than 10-2. Whether or not we believe that expectation will be met is totally different.
There are perfectly valid reasons to support why 10-2 will be difficult to achieve, but that doesn't mean the bar has to be lowered to make 8-4 more satisfactory.

Have an upvote.
In the end, we all generally want the same thing. For this season, I'm just not comfortable expecting 10-2. Next year, different story. Even O said 2019 would be "their year".
I don't see it as "10-2 or bust". I see it as "impress me or bust". 9-3 with close losses would impress me for this particular season. 10-2, very impressed, great job O.

If 10-2 impresses you, then you're not expecting 10-2 (which has been the norm). It sounds like you're expecting 9-3 (which is a fair expectation imo). I'm expecting 8-4.
I mean, you’re just being obtuse at this point.
You are using the term expecting when what you mean is predicting.
I am using expectation in the sense of what the team should achieve, given the talent, not what they will achieve.
I’m not expecting anything, at least not anything I’ve expressed here.
I can still be happy and impressed by a team that achieves what they should, not just when they overachieve.
When I said 9-3 would be par I didn’t mean that’s what I predict, or what they should achieve, I meant basically 9-3 is the bare minimum to avoid being a failure of a season, even though it would still be underachieving in my opinion.
Basically it would mean likely going 1-3 against the best teams on our schedule, something that isn’t impressive but also not necessarily a huge embarrassment.
It would be a failure to reach the team’s full potential, but also not a fireable offense assuming the losses were to the better teams and in at least competitive fashion.
I can’t believe you don't honestly see the difference here.

And now can't find a HC gig....don't you love experts?

That’s legitimately embarrassing.

Athlon is garbage ... used to look at it for the cheerleader section only.

Not reading through 9 pages but Harbaugh at #9?? What has he done at UM? Nothing. That's enough to info to disregard this list.

As much as I’m not a O fan
His record so far as LSU head coach proves this to be total BS
He is top 50 for sure
Huge part of Head coach job is recruiting obviously

LSU deserves better than orgeron

Neal Brown appears to be a rising star. P5 schools will be calling on him soon if he keeps this up.

Problem with getting him is he has a $7 million buyout if he leaves after this season.
I know. He turned things around at Iowa State last year, turning a doormat into a team that beat Oklahoma and TCU. Then they signed him to a new deal. I wish we had hired him after Miles was let go. I've thrown his name out several times on this board even before the Athlon article was posted. Turned down job offers from Belichick and Urban Meyer to be a HC.
He is the kind of rising star your AD has to have the foresight to nab when the time is right. But that takes some actual work to identify and go after guys like him. That is how you hire your next great HC, not by paying out the nose for a guy like Jimbo and certainly not by throwing in the towel on someone like O. I doubt Alleva even knows who he is though, with the exhaustive search he did and all.

Bigger than on field coaching?
Hiring the right assistants?
Game planning for a team?
Having a structured system in place so things arent a big mess?
Recruiting does not make good coaches. It can be the difference between a good coach and a great coach but does not make a coach good, too many other factors with a head coach.
Now if we were talking about a recruiting coordinator and D-line coach then I would agree 100%

What are the chances Troy would trade Neal Brown for Orgeron straight up?
I figure we'd have to sweeten the deal a bit.

He signed a 6-year extension last fall, making the same money as Orgeron. I doubt he's in a hurry to go anywhere yet.
Campbell's very close to the AD there. So close in fact that there's a clause in his buyout that if the AD leaves Iowa St., his buyout is reduced to half.
But there's only so much he can do with the resources at his disposal in Ames. Low ceiling. I think if the right opportunity presented itself, he'd consider it.
Hell, bring in their AD too as a package deal. Couldn't be any worse than Alleva.

81 is such a crock of shite

Why? We haven't lowered those expectations in the past 15 years due to coaching changes or tough schedules.
Besides that, Orgeron was the one who said he understood and invited the expectations. That we'd be competing for championships "very fast".
Orgeron set the bar for himself from day one. The only reason to lower it now is to protect him. That's why Ree went mental a few days ago when people expected 10-2, all while he refused to offer his own expectation.
Good Post. That's the bottom line and simply matter of fact.
It's at the point where Orgeron must meet the toughest requirement for an LSU head coach which is to win at a high level. He's yet to pull this off as a head coach and it's going to be an uphill battle for him. His head coaching career has merely produced hollow results and he's all out of life lines.
Orgeron's head coach ranking seems reasonable at this point. Over 10 years ago at Ole Miss he was absolutely terrible for 3 years before being fired. Following that, over a 5 to 6 year span he filled in as interim HC at 2 different schools posting a 11-4 record. Then, his first full season as LSU's head coach he finished 9-4. As you can see there's nothing he's done over the last 13 years that justifies a higher ranking.
LSU wants top 5 results with some championships along the way and this takes an "exceptional" head coach. They're the ones who make all the right decisions while surrounding themselves with elite players and a highly skilled staff. There's simply not many of these head coaches in college football today.
Winning at the level that LSU and other big time programs require is extremely hard. It's going to take a Herculean effort and some luck for our 81st ranked head coach to do this.
