Social media is the real issue. Everyone sees snipits of people’s best times and wonder why they aren’t living life like _______.

They get depressed and yea.

Yeah, I think Social Media plays a role. And not just because people see other people who pretend to be living the "perfect life", but it is the cause of younger people.. Middle school, high school aged kids. If something happens to them at school, it doesn't leave them. Before social media, after the school day, everyone went home and whatever happened was over.. Until the next day then eventually it would die off.. But today it follows them. And some kids, the pressure just gets to be too much. It's sad really.

This is the real cause. People have more luxuries today than ever before, even the poor.

this is a big part of it. there are all sorts of legit social ills exploding due to social media

but also, suicide/unhappiness tracks with intelligence so as our society becomes more intelligent and knowledgeable, you're going to face these issues on a wider scale. in an ironic way, these are issues of abundance (which is why all the progressives who act like our abundant society should be communal to allow our social creativity to explode is so off base)

this is all based in a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes us happy. i can't speak for women as much, but men have, by and large, lost sight of this. it's partly due to social advancement and abundance and partly due to things like our society being feminized, but it's real.
