The whole idea was to create hysteria around a Russian boogeyman.
"See! Look what they're doing! They're attacking the legitimacy of our elections. Putin is a bad actor. And Trump is in bed with him! We must investigate."

This shite is so obvious it's laughable. Thank God they were foolish enough to not take Trump seriously otherwise they might have actually buckled down/covered their tracks better.

Remember, Obama himself said "There's no way anyone could rig an election." And he was on record saying he was sure Hillary would win. If there was a Russian operation in favor of Trump, Obama sure thought it would have zero effect on the outcome. (He was right, it didn't).
Now, AFTER the election on the other hand, Russia became the villain.
I have to tell you, General Flynn's military counterintelligence experienced does cross my mind when I read stories like the OP. It's like he possibly goaded them into this entire MUH Russians debacle.
