They are not forced, all sports (outside of football really) have other avenues they can go and not be forced into working for these Universities.
Football players, perhaps not so coincidentally are the ones most hurt by this....

They also still have freedom of speech and choice, no one has taken that away from them.
You realize that attaching government consequences to speech is quintessentially what the First Amendment prohibits, right?

Curious what they don't get?
Are you insinuating they're paid just like a coach, AD, school president?
No, so they don't get "everything they want"
quote:
Curious what they don't get? The ones I was friends with at LSU
- didn't have to work to pay for books
- didn't have to work to pay for an apartment
- had a food voucer to be used anywhere on campus
- had free clothing (of course all LSU gear)
- had access to free tutoring/help
- received free books
- could walk into Chimes/TJ Ribs and eat for free (technically I know this isn't a school issue but they got it)
- got into and drank in most of the Tigerland clubs for free
Which of these can they use to, say, help their parents pay a few bills?

This is pathetic.

I didn't realize getting an education meant somebody has to subsidize your parents.

Pretty easy
Look, if you want to say they should get straight paid that is one argument to be had. However, life is very easy for the actual athlete on scholarship. He may have family struggles, but that is outside what the school is promising the individual.

Oh yeah, of course I would have had to quit school if I had to help my parents plus pay for everything to keep myself afloat. That or I take out substantial student loans in order to make ends meet.

No, especially those who don't really go to class. They pick the easiest class the ones that will keep their GPA above the limit in order to play.
They all see the NCAA as a stepping stone to the NFL/NBA/MLB/WNBA so they do the bare minimum in order to pass and keep eligibility. They get all the help they need to do this as well.

Isn’t that exactly the argument the documentary is making?

That is a gross over dramatization

I know of a handful of guys at LSU that were told by coaches not to take certain courses. Joe Barksdale immediately comes to mind. He wanted to take a number of philosophy courses while at LSU and a number of coaches were not exactly thrilled with that.
Arian Foster also talked about his experience at Univ of Tenn on his podcast and how they had a set plan for him as far as classes were concerned. Midway thru his sophomore year he decided to change things up and take classes that he found interesting. A number of the coaches labeled him as a "problem" and "not apart of the team" when he did this.
Then you have the UNC mess

Again, the right to the profits of your labor is a human right.... no?

Now, if you are picking electives that interfere with practice times, there can be issues. But honestly, its not really that outlandish for a coach to not want you to take elective classes that overrun your practice

quote:It depends on how you look at it. I don't really think LBJ is comparing the situation with athletes to people who are in concentration camps or whatever. But I also think it's pretty fricked up that an organization like the NCAA has said "No you should wait 3-5 years to make money off of your talent. While we make bank off of you immediately". Then they turn around and hammer dudes who go out for a meal or get a car from a former player or alumni.

I do think they should be able to make money off their name and likeness.
I will not stoop to the dramatic level to call that a basic human right

It isnt denying them a basic human right
We need to get away from bullshite dramatic buzzwords and phrases, and hammer people when the use them

I will make no exception for LeBron
