As stated Walton county (Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach) was the one to originally ban the "canopies", but they have since revised their size limit.
What you are seeing is some resorts and beach communities banning them. Although a 10x10 is allowed by Walton county, the individual communities and resorts can set their own rules. The majority of the beaches in Walton county are private.
Banning tents is a money maker for resorts and the HOA's who get a fee from the beach vendors, mostly La Dolce Vita.
If you wanted to be a dick, you could set your "canopy" in front of all the umbrellas below the historical tide line and no one could legally force you to move.

Wrong.
Public beach areas are designated directly in front of public beach access. Check with the Walton County TDC.
And most people that bring canopies or cheap umbrellas don’t know what they are doing. Been in the Walton County beach area for 30 years and see it every time where umbrellas and canopies are like floating frisbees with spears attached.
Just rent from the professionals. About $100 for a week and no hassle.

I don't know either, but I'll hit Pensicola way before I'll ever go to Destin again...

Here is your best method for securing an 8X8 canopy:
1) open up 8 X 8 canopy with top already affixed to the accordion frame.
2) Dig 4 deep holes ; one for ea leg and put the extended legs into ea hole.. Cover ea leg with a lot of sand.
3) Bring 4 Home Depot buckets and fill ea one with wet sand. Tie each bucket with rope and attach to the 4 corners. I bury ea bucket also about a foot under the sand and pile additional sand on top. Your rope should be tightly tied to ea bucket.
I have never had a pop up tent fly away using this method.

I use old pillow cases. Way easier to transport. Fill halfway with sand, tie rope to it.

It's not that hard carrying an umbrella and chair down to the beach each morning

An umbrella offers shade, enough to take a quick timeout and then back out to enjoy the water and beach. Also. they make SPF 50+ for kids. Nap time take them up and give them a break. It's really not the canopy's fault, unfortunately they can bring in the crowd who ends up taking 40 yards of beach and looking like a group of beached whales smoking cigarettes and having a tailgate.

liability = not renting enough of their umbrellas and chairs.

Saw some old baw with a 1980s fold up chair with an umbrella attachment. Whole thing ended up 400 yards away in another house's pool

"Last year we passed a code that prohibited any tents larger than six by six by six," Kellenberger explained. "The reasoning was, the data we had received over the course of last year revealed that the general public didn't like the pop-up style tents. So, we made an effort to prohibit those types of the tents."

You do realize you can bring umbrellas and chairs out there right...
Canopies, as far as I'm concerned, are a pain in the arse...Umbrellas are easy...

One of the reasons I don't go to the beach anymore.
People claiming space on the beach ruined the experience for me.
