is there any program/software you guys use to calculate a monthly budget? any suggestions for putting together a budget?

Just use Excel. List all of your fixed costs and try your best to estimate your variable cost per month. Then subtract that from your monthly take home after taxes.

Also, I like Personal Capital for visualizing your income/spending/savings/investments.

I use mint.com
You have to give them a lot of your usernames and passwords and it will auto compile all of your transactions
Cash transactions are manual if you even want to add them.
I’ve been using mint for 8 or 9 years

Big fan of YNAB (You Need A Budget)

Mint.com is pretty basic, but brings all of your accounts together and builds a history. You can set budgets and have it send reminders and regular reports.
If you need something more sophisticated, YNAB is very popular.

some banks have software you can use. My credit union has one online linked with my checking/savings. each bill that comes through you can assign to a category. even link my credit card to it

Is there a charge or monthly fee for mint.com?

Mint is free, but you have to give link your bank details, credit card accounts and possibly SSN (not 100% sure about SSN).

This right here. I was able to put aside a bunch of money we were just bleeding out, you just have to stay active with it and follow your budget.

Second. I seem to be grandfathered into the old pricing scheme. It was a better deal at $50 a year than $80 (or $100) that it is now, but I still think it would be worth it. It's very well thought out and intuitive.
We replaced an envelope system with YNAB and couldn't be happier.

mint.com?
Mint is free, which is why I suggest to start there. If you find it inadequate, try YNAB.

Didn't realize it went up. I must be locked in too. Wouldn't pay more than $50.

I do mine the old fashioned way - a pen and a notebook. Obviously fixed/recurring bills are the easy part - groceries and non-recurring expenses/entertainment were the only things that took a little time to nail down. Simply writing down everything I spent money on for a few months made it easy to nail down a budget. I’ve stayed within a pretty narrow window for the most part in my monthly spending once I got it on paper. I don’t see the need for this to be on a computer.

I pay for everything i can with credit, so it's easy for me to budget using mint. Mint is great for showing you trends with your fluctuating spending categories (food, car, etc.). I'm thinking of setting up a personal capital account to make it easier to see the big picture.
