Has LSU reinstated the legacy scholarship program, or no?

For those who don't know, LSU used to allow children of LSU alumns, residing out of state, to attend LSU at the in-state tuition rate. At some point during Alexander's tenure, he nixed the program. I guess the idea was that the university was losing out on thousands of dollars per student, per semester, when in reality, probably 90% of these students wouldn't have attended LSU without the waiver. In essence, we probably made more money with the program than without.

I think it was great, allowing for the growth of the LSU brand across the country. Some of these students might even decide to stay in Louisiana after graduation. Plus, it's a little bone for graduates residing out of state, staying involved, donating, etc.

Any chance this program gets going again? Maybe the new board can put the wheels in motion.

Edit: Looks as though the program ended in 2011.

It was a good program that King axed to show he was in control. It is an embarrassment to LSU graduates that if they leave the state, the university turns its back on them, except for the donation requests.

It’s been reinstated. Not as broad or generous. But it’s there:

Most of the LaTech, and ULM grads I know from growing up in NELA leave the state too.

I love LSU but why are you encouraging this as an option, if y'all already live out of state?

Times are a little lean at the ole Flagship right now.

Because there’s no way I’m paying out of state tuition for an LSU degree. There are other states that offer in-state tuition rates to out of state students.

Well it’s just one more thing in a long line of money grabs done by my alma mater during Kings tenure.

I am not familiar with how generous legacy scholarship used to be, but I have a family member who was just awarded this. He's out-of-state but was awarded in-state full tuition. It combined legacy, other scholarships, and TOPS.

How can a prospective student who lives out of state get TOPS?

It was removed in 2010. Before Alexander was at LSU.

Looks like 2011. They claim that the program was diverting "millions" of dollars in aid that could have been used elsewhere, which indicates they were charging the out of state rate, then filling 75% of that rate with scholarship funds.

Why not just charge the in-state rate, still allocate the "millions" of dollars elsewhere, and keep the program? Am I missing something?

Whatever tool was in charge. Maybe it was Bob Broadhead or Warton? As if anyone can remember stuff that far back. Why are you so intent on splitting hairs? It’s like your trying to cover something up.

For all you know, before King took the job, he had it removed as a condition of accepting the job.

The university was relying upon the out of state rate to stay in the black, so the appropriate amount of scholarship funds had to be thrown in that hole to fill the void.

They could have just charged in - state rate, but they would have had to cut something.

And then the kids didn't show up, and they still had a funding gap.

Why are you so intent on blaming everything wrong with LSU on Alexander? The scholarship was cut around 2010-2011. F King was appointed in 2013.

Some of yall on here act like corrupt and/or incompetent public officials in Louisiana began with F King, JBE, and SWB.
