Jewel Upshaw, the mother of a G League basketball player who died in March after collapsing on the court during a game, has filed a lawsuit accusing the NBA and the Detroit Pistons of negligence.
quote:
The lawsuit alleges that medical personnel at the game failed to attempt lifesaving measures in a timely fashion, and that Upshaw's death was "wholly preventable."
The suit says that the Drive's team doctor conveyed to Upshaw's mother that he "had stepped out before the end of the basketball game and was not present nor available when Zeke collapsed."
quote:
Please don't pity me or anything like that," she added. "Just join me as I fight for my child. He deserved an immediate response when he collapsed."
The suit alleges that the NBA fails to adequately prepare for and protect its league players from sudden cardiac death.

It was at that moment, Larry realized he had just fricked up.

Welp. If the doctor wasn't on hand I can see how she might win.

I hope she at least waited til they offered her some cash, cuz i doubt they are going to do that now because it will be shown as admitting some responsibility

I've seen the video. The response team was completely pathetic. They responded how any untrained person would respond. Sat there and did nothing. This lady has every right to sue.
Video (Yes. He dies)

Wow that video is ridiculous. The staff just sat there next to him and watched him die. I never saw anyone try to check vitals at all.

Can't see the video at work. Does anyone do CPR? Seems like something everyone on the training staff should be trained on. Referees should be trained too. It's not hard or expensive to learn.
He might have been done for either way but at least they would've been covered.

not in the portion of the video you can see, nor apparently through the entire 4 minutes of video. they cut away from the downed player about a minute in and show his team's bench and other parts of the arena, but the play by play guys is still speaking. he doesn't mention the guy being turned over until the video is damn near over. and that's just to get him on a stretcher.

I saw the video the other day. It was terrible. The guy collapses flat onto his stomach and doesn't move. Looked like a gunshot victim. The people who came out to help were pretty much just kneeling around him. It definitely looked like they had no idea what to do.
