Deserved its own thread. Party of freedom more like the party of snowflakes

quote:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters)

The bill passed the South Carolina House by 86 votes to 4 late on Wednesday. Its sponsor, Republican Representative Alan Clemmons, said its passage showed the state was “leading the fight against anti-Semitism.” Opponents of the measure said they thought it went too far into censoring critics of Israel’s government.

Governor Henry McMaster was expected to sign the measure into law when it reaches his desk, a spokesman said.

The legislation defines anti-Semitism as including calling for attacks on Jews, blaming Israel for all political tensions, and denying its right to exist. Opponents of the bill had argued it trampled on free speech and could stifle academic debate.

The bill says colleges must consider its definition of anti-Semitism when investigating allegations of discrimination on campus.

Would you mind elaborating on what you disagree with, in particular?
I’m almost always against new legislation of any kind, but nothing about this particular piece of legislation jumps out at me as being especially controversial.

So if I were to say I dont think Israel has a right to exist the South Carolina popo are going to come after me?

How is that a crime exactly?

I put racists and anti-semites in the same category- offensive but protected speech.

So the lege is instructing universities to consider this operational definition of anti-semitism when applying the law within the context of their own institutional investigations.
I don’t see a big deal here.
Admittedly, the link gives very little info.

Because you can't legislate people's thoughts and this is definitely step toward censorship and trampling the First Amendment. I disagree with anti-Semitism, but I don't need legislation to tell me it's wrong.

Agreed, but it doesn't appear to criminalize/punish anything. It's just virtue signalling. The aforementioned bullshite port law passed by JBE actually had consequences.

I hear ya.
But I don’t believe the OP is against hate speech laws.
I was curious about his take on it.

Sounds like I can still deny the holocaust, so I don’t have many complaints

I wonder how many of those who voted for the bill are members of Forest Lake Country Club, which just admitted its first non-white member last year. This is red meat to the evangelical base here in South Carolina: a group of moronic dispensationalists who think unquestioned support for Israel will hasten the rapture and the Messiah's return.

Who said dems are the party of freedom or liberty? This order is horrifying

"Under the order, vendors must certify in writing, when a bid is submitted or contract is awarded that it is not engaged in a boycott of Israel and it will refrain from such a boycott."

Republicans didn't stand up to it? The NRA didn't bitch about it? #israelfirst

An infringement on freedom of association. Yay! Maybe the temple will get built now.
