The main thing to remember if you do it is to make sure that the brick is wet prior to "painting" the mortar on.
If you don't it will just wipe off. That may be what happened to the OP's wash.

This.
It may call for a bonding agent as well, its often called monkey milk out in the field. and use a sponge to "paint" the mortar on.
