Nainggolan retires from NT duty after being snubbed by Belgium

OFFICIAL: Radja Nainggolan has confimed his retirement from International football after not being selected for Belgium's 2018 World Cup provisional squad.
quote:
“Unfortunately and very reluctantly my international career comes to an end,” Nainggolan wrote on Instagram.
“I’ve always done everything I could to represent my country. Being yourself can irritate people…
“From this day on I’ll be the number one fan.”
quote:
“Nainggolan is a top player,” Martinez assured at his Press conference.
“The reason is tactical. In the last two years the team has worked in a specific manner. Other players had those roles.
“We know that Radja has a very important role in his club, and we cannot give him that role in our squad.”
quote:
Trevor Noah @Trevornoah There's no way Radja Nainggolan was left out of the Belgium squad for tactical reasons. The coach doesn't like his personality or what he brings off the pitch and clearly he doesn't play FIFA. Radja is a beast!

Wow. Martinez is drunk.

He got suspended for one match by Roma for drunk posting instagram photos this past new year's eve.
However, this is obviously just some personal issue Roberto Martinez has with Nainggolan. Likely that he told Nainggolan he'd have to change his lifestyle and Nainggolan didn't and Martinez likely being petty and arrogant at expense of Belgian NT.
Nainggolan's played under three different managers at Roma and that one game suspension is his only discipline issue ever regardless of reports of he and his wife enjoying the nightlife around Roma quite a bit.
He also came back from that suspension to have De Rossi pass him the captain's armband when he was subbed off the next match.
If Nainggolan's hustle, energy, determination etc are affected at all by partying off the pitch, I certainly wish he were taking all of Roma's players out with him.

He "retired" last year too. LINK
quote:
“I won’t do this anymore. I quit. I am 29 years old and they won’t let me go any further than this. I’m sorry, but that’s just how it is.
quote:
“He called me at 11.00 (one hour before the squad announcement, ndr) and said he had the impression I was not focused enough on playing for the Red Devils during the World Cup matches in June. I was about to explode when I heard that,” Nainggolan told Nieuwsblad.
It was reported Martinez turned on him when he arrived late for a tactics session ahead of the Estonia game.
“He didn’t mention it, but we only talked for a minute, no more than that. As for Estonia, I was waiting for the lift for 37 seconds and was late. Other players were late too, I was not alone. It’s always something.
“I am going to stop international football now. It makes no sense. He calls Youri Tielemans who is sitting on the bench and playing only a few minutes at Monaco.
“When he was appointed, Martinez said that the Red Devils must play in top competitions. Now that Axel Witsel is in China, suddenly that doesn’t apply anymore. That’s all fine, but I have to step up my game? Come on.
“Actually, I was in the same restaurant as Martinez in Ibiza. He did not say hello or goodbye, neither did I. How can you work together like that?”

A melt is ensuing.

Over 10,000 Belgium fans have signed a petition for Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan to be called up for the World Cup.
“Belgium needs Radja to [go] the World Cup in Russia! One of the best and most important players [in] the Belgian team!” read the plea on Change.org.
“The Coach deprives an entire nation of one of his best players over some differences between himself and the player? This isn’t normal!”

Martinez seems like a real jackass.
It's unbelievable that Belgian's "golden generation" has been managed by clowns.

Really is ridiculous. You can use the “we can’t fit you in” excuse for the first XI, even though he’s the second midfielder on the time sheet for me right behind KdB. But to totally leave him out the squad is ridiculous to me. He’s a valuable versatile player to have on a WC squad and despite his perceived behavior off the pitch, it hasn’t ever impacted his fitness or performance that I’m aware of.

Yup. wm knows more than I do I'm sure, but I've never heard a thing about discipline issues aside from the one match suspension this last year. It's just like with Jeremy Mathieu. Dude apparently ripped a pack a day when he was with Barca.
It's almost certainly a personal spat between him and Martinez keeping him out. He was called up in Belgium's last few matches, but missed two through injury and played only like 30 minutes in the third.
I know before that he wasn't even getting called in.

I think Radja should be in the team 100 percent, but he likely wouldn't start. Belgium run a 3-4-3 and it will be Witsel and KDB starting in the middle like it has been for like two years now.
Teh big complaint is what happens if KDB picks up a knock? You probably have to move Hazard from LW to KDB"s role and then move Chadli to the LW. That would be a nightmare scenario.

I think Klinsman would disagree with this.

I still stand by my opinion that Belgium has the talent to make a deep run
This move not only keeps a really talented guy off their team but Martinez just cranked up the heat on himself 10x more. If they don’t at the very least make the quarterfinals Martinez gets canned and his replacement immediately gets Nainggolan on the phone on the plane home from Russia

Amazing that Chadli, who couldn't crack WBA's XI, is in this team

It happens too frequently. Mick McCarthy did it with Roy Keane. Klinsmann did it with Donovan. Multiple coaches snubbed Redondo in the 90s. Nainggolan is clearly a top player for Belgium. Either a starter or top reserve against any opponent.
