More isolated.

I read a great article about how the Amish deal with new technologies. They try them out, see how they fit in (or don't fit in) with their lifestyle and then accept or reject it.

I wish we did it. I think a lot of technology, particularly social media, has brought us father apart.

Here's the link to the article about the Amish and technology.

Social media is terrible. Smart phones are pretty bad too. I wish I never got one. Tempted to chunk it and get a flip phone if I can break my addiction off.

So you support the Amish now?

"Support" is the wrong word. I enjoy visiting the Amish county, and they build amazing (and often huge) barns. They were very kind to me and I enjoyed my visit immensely.

Their horse drawn farm equipment is pretty ingenious.

I have a smart phone but it never works right. I keep it turned off most of the time as I don't trust it and I'm pretty sure that it has been hacked.

People can't put their cell phones down. I went to have breakfast at a little country cafe this morning and some guy comes in ahead of me and basically shuts the door in my face. He orders to go, eats it at the counter. He was wearing some Costa t-shirt, played on his phone the entire time, didn't tip, and drank an energy drink (and had his hat on backwards). He looked like a douchebag and acted like one.

What did you prefer the salty unshaved Amish gangbang or sucking off one of the horses?

I think you just illustrated the "technology has made us worse) argument. I hope you aren't that much of a pig wanker in person.

Superficially everyone is closer.

But in reality everyone is farther apart.

You feel simultaneously close to everyone but there's no real closeness.

It causes issues.

It's en vogue to parrot this but I don't buy it. I think it's largely nonsense. It's something usually said by people 35+ years old. You still have friends you communicate with and meet up with and then there are other "friends" you have only superficial connections to. Now those connections can be maintained via interwebs.

People are as close as they want to be, with face to face interaction, texting, facebook, etc. Some people substitute face-to-face interaction for virtual interaction because they're more comfortable doing so, but these are the types of people who would otherwise not be interacting with anyone.

We pretend as if loneliness is a new phenomenon. That throughout history there haven't been lonely people who stayed in their rooms and read or led secluded lives.

We're simply able to access or be better aware of lonely people now with technology.

The ability to communicate with people online has given secluded and lonely people an outlet they otherwise wouldn't have had.

This is a good point. Growing up there were always a few recluses in the neighborhood that never came outside or socialized with the neighbors. Now those people have the poli board.

Good point.

Personally, I don't like texting other than for one short communication like "I'll be 5 min late" or "bring an extra leadline with you." I won't have a texting conversation.

Way, WAY more isolated. Glad all I have to do is send a blast completely insincere text each Thanksgiving pretending I care now, though. Makes pretending so much easier.
