There's actually something to this. Mathieu talked about it when he was at LSU. Said that he constantly envisioned himself making big plays. Not just wishing it would happen, but being absolutely confident it would take place.
Pro golfers do the same thing to an extent. They will imagine their shot, then work themselves up to 100% confidence that the shot will go exactly how they envisioned it. Then swing the club.
Obviously a ton of practice goes into this, but it helps to snuff out self-doubt.
