Miguel Cabrera says his efforts to play through injuries with the Detroit Tigers have been unappreciated and he is "done playing hurt."

quote:

"I went through that last year, so I don't want to do the same thing," Cabrera told reporters Tuesday, according to mlive.com. "Nobody appreciates you when you play hurt, so I'm going to take my time and play when I'm good. I played hurt a lot of years here in Detroit. They don't appreciate that."

quote:

"When you are doing bad, they crush you. They crush you," he said. "They say you're bad, you should go home, you don't deserve anything, you're old. I say, 'OK, I'm done playing hurt.' Now I take my time."

quote:

Cabrera is in the third year of an eight-year, $248 million contract that is guaranteed through his age-40 season. The 11-time All-Star first baseman was off to a good start this season, batting .323 with three homers and 21 RBIs in his first 26 games.

He is obviously a first-ballot Hall of Fame player, but does this come off as a little whiny? Yeah, injuries hurt him last year as he had his lowest output of his career but this can't be a good look to attack the fans/media.

He’s probably 40 already. They have no idea how old these guys are. This contract will be worse than Pujols.

The Tigers suck, so I don't really blame him for not wanting to play banged up, but that does come across fairly whiny.

He's right but that's not relevant in social media.

I get his point. The media hammers players who are struggling and they might be hurt for all we know.

I know from a college prospective we got guys from overseas on our team a couple times that werent really sure how old they were but we thought were a few years older than they claimed.

in terms of professional athletes im not sure what exactly miggy has to gain from lying about his age to make himself younger. even when he was being signed it wouldve benefitted him more to say he was older than he really was no? (saying he was 20 when he was really 18)

I've never thought about it with Cabrera before, but I've always thought Pujols was 3 years or so older than he actually claims to be. Nothing beats Fausto Carmona playing under a fake name though.

No. When he signed, scouts would have marveled over an 18 year old wunderkind much more than one who was 20 doing the same stuff.

What if he was 16 saying he was 18? maybe they wouldve marveled over him but odds are they were going to sign a kid at 16.

what im saying is theres just as much argument to be made the other way.

Read the OP. Cabrera sounds like he spends more time on Twitter checking his mentions than Kevin Durant.

Is he?

Less than 2700 hits and less than 475 homers. 3000 or 500 get you in, so his combo of being close to the others, along with his 300+ BA do probably get him in, but maybe not first ballot.

Baseball is funky like that

If his Manger/GM/Front office are crushing him, it's not whiny at all, and if I made $30mil/year I'd do the same as he's doing now.

But I imagine that's not the case, and he's talking about fans/media which of course makes it very whiny.

He has a Triple Crown, has 2 MVPs, won 4 batting titles, and is an 11 time All-Star.

This isn't even close to doubtful.
