Short term disability insurance/pregnancy

I don't really know if this is the place to ask but....am I wrong in thinking that this kicks in after my wife has a child?
After our first child she was getting a check from Lincoln while she was out (I assumed it was a short term disability benefit.) She was laid off on maternity leave and lost her benefits and now only works part time (39 hours.)
I called state farm today and the agent said there is no insurance that will supplement income while out after child birth. Is he correct? and if so is there anything individually I could do to supplement income in the event of a second pregnancy?

Some short term policies cover maternity leave, some do not, AFLAC does cover it

I called aflac and they say that they do not cover it for individuals...it would have to be a group policy.

According to the couple of attorneys we talked to, yes. They eliminated her position. So she came back to work and then released her. I think it has something to do with Alabama being a right to work state and the fact they got rid of all of the nurse practitioners.
Gave her two weeks severance though

typically it STD covers for 6 weeks-elimination period for a normal delivery. That would be the group insurance. The individual plans vary widely but I am pretty sure the one my wife had through northwestern mutual covered it. It will only cover if she is not pregnant when it is taken out also. Usually there is a 9 month exclusion period on pregnancy.

Is who I have my life insurance through and my agent told me they don't do short term? I have a text into him now.
ETA
I remember...they do offer it but it has to be through a group/employer sponsored benefit

There indeed are policies that cover this.
9 month waiting period however.
I advise my clients planing on families to get this ASAP. Usually like $40/month, but the benefits are 60% income non taxable.

Sounds right. They probably offer it to companies to get the rest of the supplemental insurance business.

That sucks. Wife's firm offers four months paid.
Most places I know, including my employer, require you to burn through PTO and sick leave, etc.
I'd like to think we could find a middle ground between what we have and Europe.
