Now Tosun is a Turkish citizen who likely takes his and/or his family's life in his own hands if he refuses.

But what are German citizens Ozil and Gundogan's excuses?

https://www.dw.com/en/mesut-%C3%B6zil-and-ilkay-g%C3%BCndogan-criticized-for-erdogan-meeting/a-43780509

quote:

The Premier League stars, who were joined by a third player, Everton striker Cenk Tosun, met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at London's Four Seasons hotel on Sunday. President Erdogan, who is up for re-election on June 24, is in the British capital for a three-day state visit, where he is to be received by Queen Elizabeth II and meet with Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday.

Each player presented Erdogan with a football jersey from his respective club, before posing for a picture with the president. Gündogan's Manchester City shirt was also inscribed with the personal message: "With great respect for my president."

Gundogan, noted above, wrote "With great respect for my president."

So Erdogan is the president of Germany, is he?

I wonder what the ownership of the individual teams think about this?

Pretty sure a lot of his family is Turkish.

Both Ozil and Gundogan have Turkish ancestry, maybe they were trying to use their influence for good. Think we can all agree Erdogan sucks, but I won't hold it against them for trying to use their position to help the people of Turkey.

They've got Turkish heritage...both are Turks who were born in Germany. Get over yourself.

Are they German citizens?

Or are they Turks who claim German citizenship for the advantage of being German citizen but refuse to assimilate?

By the way, I'm not the guy defending a couple of players that want to suck the dick of a tyrant that throws reporters and Christians (and others he determines are his "enemies") in jail on charges invented out of thin air... YOU are.

Yeah, those are always the kinda guys you can "influence" by giving them a jersey and letting them take pictures with you to make it seem like they are just normal guys and not a dictator that has subverted the greatest (now former) democracy in the Middle East.

frick off.

Gundogan's wiki says his cousin plays on the Turkish volleyball team.

BTW, possibly-former Liverpool player Emre Can, also a German citizen and also of Turkish descent, was also invited to glad-hand the tyrant who jails and kills his domestic "enemies" without trial or due process, but he had integrity enough to tell the tyrant no.

Looks like someone needs a history lesson of Germany's relationship with Turkey.

For starts Turks have been in Germany since the 60's many families are 3rd and 4th generation like Ozil's, and are full assimilated. Many of them are still able to hold both passports but the German gov't recently changed that bc so many were doing that to claim benefits from Turkey.

You should probably visit Germany before making wild assumptions about the Turks. They are not the problem in German that is going on right now. They are not fans of the hoards of Arabs that flooded into the country. Turks don't like Arabs.

Sadly it might be an improvement over their current leadership.

Then maybe guys like Ozil et.al., as GERMAN CITIZENS, should try not to give a tongue-bath to a tyrant that is openly hostile to the country of their birth and citizenship who styles himself as a present-day Ottoman Caliph.

But, my gosh, god forbid that responsible citizens be expected to prioritize civics over culture these days.
