Hymel's in Convent for Mother's Day

So apparently Hymel's has been mismanaged and went downhill over the past few years. But now, it's under new management and the guy seems to be very enthusiastic and intent on righting the ship. I've decided to give them another shot and I'm going on Sunday. I've read some good things about the crawfish bisque (one of my favorite dishes) but none of them are recent. Has anybody had it recently that can vouch for it? Any other recs?

You got your scoop wrong. Jamesy gave the business to his daughter who in turn hired someone to run the place. They dropped prices and apparently didn't know wtf they were doing so he took the business back from his daughter. Now the prices are back up again. I went with my family last weekend and it wasn't great, but not terrible either.

It’s good for what it has always been, an old fashioned fry house like the original Middendorf’s, the original Phil’s Oyster Bar, Fisherman’s Wharf in Biloxi or the North Carolina Fish Camps. It doesn’t aspire to be anything more than that and people’s expectations should be tempered towards that.
Knowing that going in it has good fried shrimp but I suggest ordering the jumbo, big frosty mugs of beer, best boiled crabs anywhere, a good turtle soup and good bisque.
Get a big cold beer, and old fashioned shrimp cocktail and enjoy some saltines with a square pat of butter on cardboard while you wait for your order. I go a lot when the crabs start running and get full because no one boils them better.
And it is run by James Hymel not sure where the “new management” came from.

I don’t know anything about the family. I was just told by someone close to the situation what had happened over the past few years, and how they’re trying to right the ship. I want some solid feedback before I go, though. I’m not going to waste my time nor $ if it’s still just meh. I guess James is the one I’ve been talking to on social media? Seems like a younger guy, but I could be wrong.
Was planning on trying the whole flounder and bisque, but I’m not dropping $30+ for average food.

Turnaround was extremely quick Martini
. James is an older guy, probably 55+. I talked to him with my dad before we sat down the other night. Said he had to take it back from his daughter because he couldn't sit by and let her frick it up

I saw the "new management" bit on FB as well. Had no reason to doubt it but whatevs.
Id go there again for the crazy taxidermy and the memories. I remember when it was a jam packed pace.

Did yall know Hymel is a german name and not Cajun?
When I first learned that it blowed my mind guys, it blowed it!
Also, I have met some Hymels and told them that and they simply refused to believe they werent cajun

James is Jimmy's(the original owner) son. He's probably in his early 60's. I don't know his daughter but I'm sure she felt a lot of pressure to take over the place when he decided to step away. My hope is he'll right the ship and find someone else to carry on it's legacy.
I've been going there since I was a child and the food has always been consistent. The fried shrimp have tasted the same since I was 6. The boiled seafood is what they're good at. Although, the shrimp are sometimes hard to peel.

I inquired as to why they serve basa and not La. catfish - he said it had nothing to do with the price; he said basa is always the same quality/flavor, whereas the La. catfish varies and quite often folks were sending it back and he was having comp them

just curious AND I COULD HAVE THIS WRONG.
was one of the daughters/grand aughters named Winky (or Windy ? sorta remember going to LSU w one of them.

Still trying to convince my wife to let me take her tomorrow. If we do go, I’ll report back with a review and photos.

Thats true. My Uncle was a geneologist and a historian on St. James Parish. The whole NE bank of Lac Des Allemands was known as the German Coast.
