Yeah, I completely disagree. This move screams planning for life right now with no regard for what is happening in the future.

This team would have absolutely no options if Brees fell off this year. They gave away their ammo. They are absolutely betting on Brees having at least 2 more very good years.

100%

if we're trying to plan for stocking our team for post-Brees, then you don't deal a 5th and 1st to move up for a project

what we did is the literal opposite of long-term planning

Sure, but let's not act like in two years the cupboard is bear.

A strong D and consistent QB play led the Eagles to a Super Bowl and had the Vikings in the NFC championship. The Pats two years ago threw out random QB's for 4 weeks when Brady was suspended and went 4-0. You don't need a HOF QB to win if the rest of the team is above average, though having a HOF QB certainly helps.

I think it's a little of both. If the saints think he's that good, then he's here to win now and be a solid young contributor on a cheaper deal for the next 5 years, some of which is considered post brees era. Teams that succeed build through the draft, but we gave up another 1st for him. So in one hand, we are thinking right now with the jump, but also think he's good enough to be part of the future core.

Which is exactly what you should do when your QB is 39, clearly declining but still top 5 in the last season.

Absolutely and they should. We have 2 more years with a generational talent at QB.

bullshite, they are building a dominate defense. One which can carry the team when we have to bring in a groom a new QB.

drafting one this year wouldn't give them a option either.
