From Wiki

quote:

In the U.S., Representative Robert F. Broussard of Louisiana introduced the "American Hippo bill" in 1910 to authorize the importation and release of hippopotamus into the bayous of Louisiana.[81][82] Broussard argued that the hippopotamus would eat the invasive water hyacinth that was clogging the rivers and also produce meat to help solve the American meat crisis.[82][83] The chief collaborators and proponents of Broussard's bill were Major Frederick Russell Burnham and Captain Fritz Duquesne[84][85] Former President Theodore Roosevelt backed the plan, as did the U.S. Department of Agriculture, The Washington Post, and The New York Times which praised the taste of hippopotamus as "lake cow bacon".[84] The "American Hippo Bill" fell just short of being passed.[82]

Could you imagine life on the waters with a potential threat of Hippos lurking? It’s bad enough with gators. Hippos kill Crocodiles easily in subSaharan Africa. Hippos could easily charge your boat and topple everyone over to their deaths.

That would have been an absolute disaster.

I'm surprised Louisiana didn't find a way to make it happen.

Here's an interesting article that Wiki article uses as a source that explains the people and reasoning behind the idea.

American Hippopotamus

If you take disease vector insects off of the table, hippos are one of the top three killers of humans on the planet.

This might be the dumbest fricking plan I’ve ever heard. Might as well propose releasing a bunch of lions and tigers to take care for boar problem. Hippos kill more humans than any other animal save for the mosquito. They’re the animal the Croc Hunter feared the most.

We are suppose to have manatees in lake ponchatrain and other coastal water bodies but we have destroyed their habitat.
