Is it not common knowledge that Asia is responsible for the overwhelming majority of tangible ocean pollution?

I've been seeing articles like this for years: LINK

But but but the USA is the mean bully polluters and we need to cut back in our largess and freedoms to mollify these other countries who don't pollute near as much as we do.

Calling plastic bags "pollution" is an ugly and bigoted way of thinking about evolution and nature. "Plastic bags" are the new "black thugs".

"2010 Selected Countries"

Probably just not included, for some reason I can't possibly fathom. But anyway, they aren't purporting their little graphic to cover the entire world.

Inset from the article I linked earlier:

quote:

So much plastic is dumped into the sea each year that it would fill five carrier bags for every foot of coastline on the planet, scientists have warned.

More than half of the plastic waste that flows into the oceans comes from just five countries: China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

The only industrialized western country on the list of top 20 plastic polluters is the United States at No. 20.

The U.S. and Europe are not mismanaging their collected waste, so the plastic trash coming from those countries is due to litter, researchers said.

While China is responsible for 2.4 million tons of plastic that makes its way into the ocean, nearly 28 percent of the world total, the United States contributes just 77,000 tons, which is less than one percent, according to the study published in the journal Science.

The raw sewage conveniently covers up all the plastic.

3/4 of people in India's livelihood come from recycling.

I defer to someone with more Sinophilic (or phobic lol) knowledge, but I'm guessing that they just don't give a frick and don't hold environmental quality as a high value. Or maybe they don't know any better.

I'm just guessing, but I would go with don't know any better. I feel like we tend to forget that the overwhelming majority of the geographic area of China is rural and poor as frick. Their ancestors have been throwing their trash in the river for generations, because it's easy, and the river takes it away, never to be seen again.

It's a fairly recent (historically speaking) concern that we are spewing garbage into the oceans, and I doubt there has been a PR campaign in rural China on the subject.

India was paying people a dollar to use porta potties not long ago.

These countries are basically tlgoing through the industrial revolution with 800 million more people. It's gonna be messy.

This would be more representative on a per capita basis.

The oceans and the inhabitants being killed by this plastic really don’t care about the per capita basis.

Sea Turtle: China sure is dumping a lot of garbage in our home.

Shark: But it really isn’t so bad when you consider all the people it has.

Sea Turtle: If it is dumped by 1 person or 1 billion people, it is still the same amount of garbage to us.
