Nick Storz will start tomorrow for #LSU

No more than an inning or two.

quote:

Mainieri said he does not expect Storz to go more than an inning or two against the Green Wave, but it is a big step just to have the 6-foot-7 Storz take the field.

quote:

“We’re going to start him so he can go through the starter’s routine with (pitching coach Alan Dunn) down there with him,” said Mainieri, who added that he did not want Storz to have to debut late in a tight game.

Labas will likely follow Storz with a multiple-inning performance. Mainieri would not say whether he would shorten Labas’ workload with the intention of using him against Vanderbilt this weekend.

“I can’t predict how many innings it will be. We’ll let the game dictate that a little bit,” Mainieri said of Labas. “But we’re hoping he can pitch a good portion of the game, do a good job for us and give us a chance to win.”

Sweet. I'm sure he'll be on a very limited pitch count.

Mainieri is talking to the media now and I'm sure we will find out more after he's done.

He could be the missing link...

The way I see it, we have our rotation set with Hess/Gilbert/Hilliard or Labas with the other one as the postseason fourth starter/bullpen.

Out of the pen, we've got one of those two, Beck and Bain (?).

We need Storz to live up to the hype.

Honestly, at this point, Gilbert needs to move to the bullpen. Keep Hilliard in the rotation, add Labas in there once he's 100% and/or Storz as well depending on how he does. Just don't understand what is up with Gilbert.

Gilbert has been fine. Just needs more run support.

ETA: He's given up 2 earned runs in his last three starts.

He has also given up a lot of hits on favorable counts this season. Idk if it's bad luck or nerves, but it's odd given how good he has been in the past, especially in Omaha last season. If he struggles this weekend, something needs to be done imo.

Starters are supposed to throw more strikes. Even in good counts, you want to pitch to contact often. Because lots of 2-2 and 3-2 counts are bad. It’s a way different approach. He’s learning.

Labas was on a 40 pitch count when he came back so I would expect something similar for Storz. Definitely excited to see what he's got.

And he's one of the best strike throwers we have, but this season he's thrown some strikes up high in the zone that have been very costly for us, which is why I said it is odd coming from him. It's not something you usually see from him. Oh well. Rooting for the guy nonetheless. All class.

Again... 2 earned runs in his last three starts.

Doesn't seem very costly.

probably because he's also only thrown 6 walks in 25.2 innings. I believe he's thrown fewer walks per 9 innings than anyone on the team except for Labas who has 1 in 12

Gilbert's velocity has been down
His fastball is 88 to 90 whereas last year it was around 90-92
It's probably mechanical but he needs to figure it out or he will get hit hard during SEC play

He’s been at 92-93 every time I’ve seen him. That’s not the issue.

Hilliard 0.00 era. Rant perfect.

Once he gives up a HR they will light the torches.
