8 weeks seems ridiculous. 2 weeks seems like it would be more than fair for paternity leave. Enough time to get settled back in at home with the baby and have dad helping out around the house and with the baby while mom recovers. Make exceptions for longer leave in cases where the baby and/or mother had issues or complications that cause longer hospitalization or recovery time than normal.

That's not what I meant by my comment at all

I was simply implying that if you were to poll 100 people, they would assume that the mother would have more time off than the father at the birth of a child.

But thanks for putting your words into my mouth this morning.

Just letting you know the message it sends. For my kids I took one work week off. Now, if the baby has health issues, that's another story.

My wife works at a very pro-women company and she doesn't get paid maternity leave. They offer a short term disability package through Aflac but you have to be enrolled nine months prior to becoming pregnant we are starting to save now because she will be off for two months without pay. This is the one thing that Europe does right. Most countries there offer generous packages to dads and moms when there is a birth of a child. Otherwise, Europe is quite backwards.

Yeah and what if the mother had complications after delivery? May make it really hard for her to recover AND look after the baby all on her own.

If a company is offering this to their male employees...there shouldn't be any penalties to their job if they decide to use this benefit.

It's called BENEFIT. They do so to attract and keep talent. If it's provided, you take it.

I put no words in your mouth.

you will always be remembered as the guy who left for 8 weeks due to an honestly female related situation

This is a frankly stupid opinion. You're entitled to it, but it's just dumb. And you said it all on your own.

Yall are now adding a bunch of WHATIF statements to a very broad comment about a NORMAL birth.

@ you for thinking a man will come out 100% free from taking 8 weeks off.

I know right now if I had to take 8 weeks off it would be damn near impossible. We already have to hire 4 contractors for the amount of work we have going on.

First off, the people in this thread saying if you take 8 weeks off then that means you're expendable are wrong.

If your company gave you 8 weeks in your contract they did it to be competitive. Take that shite!

I have no kids and work for a company that gives dads 1 day. Most take a week off and we feel bad they have to do that. Dad's are just as important as Moms.

Yep.
I had back surgery last year and was in the bed for 8 weeks. The next morning I was on my laptop and coordinating my crews from the hospital bed.

I understand it's a benefit. I'm telling you the message it sends if things go smoothly in your absence. You're looking at what's on paper and I'm looking at how that translates in reality.

8 weeks is a long time. Not sure if I would take a full 8 weeks. At least not fully. Maybe work from home or something.

This.

I'd have to work from home or work part-time just to keep my projects from going to shite.

And that would cost me more time (or at least be a bigger pain in the arse) when I did go back.

Many places don't.

My hospital we get extended illness time (on top of our normal PTO we can use for illness/vacations/etc) that goes into a bank we can only use for FMLA qualifying events. I have like 450 hours in there so if I have a kid between that and my short term disability policy(pays for 6 weeks of 60% of my pay) I should be able to take off 12-16 weeks.
