But it still makes the most sense to take the best defensive player or pass catcher (assuming no Jimmy) at 27. Or trade back.

Not really. The core of the team requires new contracts in three years. Perfect timing to let the new QB on a rookie contract take over the team and keep the core of the team together.

Plus Baker gets at least 2 years under Drew and pretty much the entire Pre-Season.

There was thread, last week, where I gave the points of this years draft. I was hesitant to say that it would be a "Ricky Williams" type of draft trade. Maybe even worse..

I could see it. We only have a few years to win another ring.

I want Baker. He will be great replacement. Baker will keep Payton here for years to come.

SR is the same place that thinks Calvin Johnson is legit coming out of retirement to play for us. Place is garbage.

Assuming they want Baker 100%, and I'm not at all convinced that's the case, why burn a draft and a half to get to #3 (or higher) when you have no reason to believe he's going that high? When you have your starting QB on the roster, you take the risk of losing your guy (Baker) and hope 2 or 3 other guys go before him (which I think is likely) and hope Baker falls to the teens. I still think it would cost to much to jump even that high, but at least I can understand that decision for a guy who won't even play this season or next.

I'd take it.

There was talk of him trying last offseason but the Lions would not relinquish his rights.

The Saints are in "win-now" mode, you don't accomplish that by moving up to draft a backup player.

I assume you are one of those fans who are quite okay with becoming the Browns in 2 years?

Who are we going to get at 27 that will help us "win now"? That's what free agency is for, bringing in established players to help us do that. We were one freak play from being in the NFC Championship and we've already brought in an established S. In the draft, it's about building for the future and yes if they help you immediately, that's great but Brees is going to be 40 soon and we need a QB.

Not a single QB in this entire draft is worth moving up in the top 3 to get. They will all be busts. I think this is the weakest QB class in quite awhile. Would be smarter to wait and see who falls outside top 10 then look at trading up if you're dead set on it. They don't really have a guy who is a clear cut definite #1 guy over the others. They all have massive glaring flaws in their game with very little separation between them.

My guess is Payton wants Mayfield. He's a super cocky player with high confidence and short man syndrome to prove he's tall enough to play in the league. If he was 3 inches taller he'd probably be the #1 by a huge margin.

Are you fricking serious??

Wait, yeah you're right, we didn't have any Rookies contribute to the teams success last year....

Don't you have some phone cases to go sell?

If we win another Lombardi, I'll gladly get the paper bag back out.

But this team is much less dependent on a star QB now - strong o-line, 2-headed monster at RB, and a defense that can get some stops.

My opinion. I'm not in love with any of them. When you look at the recent years they've been super lucky with QBs and just about all of these recent drafts had guys in there that looked way better than the current crop and ended up being very good. Lots of young potential superstars in the league at QB and none of these guys in this draft class look remotely close to as good as the other classes coming out.

Also, QB is the highest bust % in the NFL so there is that. There's no way the Saints have the capability to move up that far. They're going to have to wait then trade up otherwise they'd be in debt for years with their drafting. Lets' not fall back to old ways where drafting was the problem under Payton outside 1 lucky year. You have to keep those young cheap picks to build a team around.
